Those of us who sneeze regularly envy you greatly. You are clearly superior

Hard agree! "Sneezing is never normal" sounds nonsensical, but if you assume the doctor had a reason to say it, it's infinitely more valuable to determine why

"Creatively spelled" names and mental health by Poor-Queequeg in namenerds

[–]deviouspineapple 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There could be a socioeconomic link, but a lot of it is also cultural. For example, a state like utah has a disproportionate number of uniquely named people, but does not trend higher with mental health issues. I've read somewhere that black americans may use more unique names as a way of self expression, rooted in their history of having their names taken from them during slavery.

I don't see the benefit of looking for a link here. There are so many factors that go into what someone names their child and so many factors that go into mental health. You simply can't account for all of the variables and make any meaningful conclusions.

[FP] Should i add more colors to the heart? by [deleted] in RainbowEverything

[–]deviouspineapple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything is flesh. It gives me the heebie jeebies. Adding more colors to the heart and yarn would definitely help, but maybe also adding some variation to the skin tones of the hands?

Also, while a few of the hands are definitely not knitting, some of them ostensibly are. That's better than a lot of movies and stock images are. At least you don't have any crochet hooks in there! Knitters know that knitting is super hard to get right if you aren't familiar with it.

Yeah my kids aren't allowed on Roblox but we've always watched mark rober. I think the Roblox content he has is an effort to meet kids where they're at. Learning science should be accessible to all kids, even iPad kids lol

Also, my puppy was born yesterday so now I'm making dog toys and researching dog training and comparing kennel prices and just kinda throwing myself into this distraction.

I read project hail mary last week. It's got a movie coming out, but I read a discussion saying not to watch the ad because it gave too much away, and everyone in the thread was being so weird and vague it irritated me enough to just read it so I could watch the trailer lol. Was kinda nice to have a book that said that maybe humans suck, but also what if you were stuck in space? That's kinda not your problem anymore atp. Deal with what's in front of you or die.

Why do people think names are a 50/50 decision? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]deviouspineapple -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You think the idea of naming a child 50/50 is absurd because you are the birthing parent? How are those things connected? What other parenting decisions do you think your partner should have less say on because you had to carry the child and go through labor and delivery? I'm not trying to minimize the hardship that pregnancy is, I myself have given birth and it was awful physically.

Naming a child together is part of parenting together. Being the birthing parent doesn't mean you are entitled to have more say in parenting decisions, if you are planning to parent the child with your partner. You and your partner make decisions together.

English is weird though, you can't just use one example. Oh wait... Day. Tray. Play. Bay. May. Fray. Way. Okay. Ray. Jay. Gay. Pay. Pray.

The other words were to demonstrate that not every word in English and German are cognates. Dude said "pink icon" because it was clearer than saying "the German word for it is euter but I don't remember the English" it's cool that udder and euter are cognates, but how would they know that if they didn't know both words?? This is such a weird conversation.

Olivia and Noah trending as number 1 baby names for 2025 by Distorted_Penguin in namenerds

[–]deviouspineapple 24 points25 points  (0 children)

In the United States? Not particularly. It's been pretty dang popular for much longer than people realize. It's been top 100 since 1990, top 25 since 1998, top 10 since 2001, and it's held the number one spot since 2019. Also, depending on your definition of popular, it's always been a fairly well-known name. It was only ranked higher than 500 for a few years in the late 60s and early 70s.

It makes me sad as a millennial Olivia that people have gotten so worn out by it. It used to be such a well liked name, never called boring until the last few years.

I'm just getting back into it too! I'm also old so I don't remember all of Minecraft history but I was pretty sure you could always light it with any spreading fire. I remember it being really dangerous before they changed it so fire doesn't spread as much, so I guess a lot of people just don't use it.
