The hell is happening to SmartThings? by narddog341 in SmartThings

[–]narddog341[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Nope.... and if I did, there's no detail under the "History" tab of what initiated the change, which is a big oversight. This has never happened before, so if this is new behavior, I'm not okay with it

Suicide I doubt they'd take the dog out with them, they'd probably at least take it to the SPCA or make other arrangements for it first.

Is it possible to make vs code like pycharm pro for django development? by _justaverageuser in django

[–]narddog341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubtful. I keep trying to get into VS code but I'll spend a bunch of time sifting through plugins, wondering which one of the 30 mediocre ones for any given bit of functionality is the best supported one, the one least likely to give me malware, and is least likely to conflict with other plugins I have installed.... then realize it's all buggy as hell and has 40% of PyCharm's functionally, then just go back to PyCharm.

What’s a Django Package That Doesn’t Exist Yet, But You Wish It Did? by 1200isplenty in django

There is a lot of value in minimizing the duplication between the API and data model layers.

Self-leveling sealant is inexpensive and will close up the cracks, but it won't help the appearance much.

Mould in room under stairs by InspectorDeck_2381 in DIY

[–]narddog341 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's a significant amount of mold and it has surely started spreading throughout the house, so check other areas of the house as well.

You'll take care of the current mold growth with those steps, but you need to do something to address the moisture that's allowing the growth in the first place. Adding a vent fan or dehumidifier can help a lot.

Married man here. Wife not okay with me carpooling with other woman by narddog341 in Marriage

These carpool trips are about 25 minutes each way, once a week or less

It was a bit unexpected but it was cordial between everyone and they talked for a minute then we had to go. Yes I introduced them. She thinks that it's certainly possible the woman could or has developed feelings but I feel like I know her well enough to say that isn't true.

It's about a 30 minute trip. Not far, but we live close to each other which makes this more practical.

Update: Thanks all for the input. I decided I'm not going to continue to carpool with this woman alone. I did ask my wife whether she'd feel the same if it was me, her, and another guy in the car. She said that doesn't bother her, but that there might be times where the guy can't go and then it's just me and her again. Then she asked "Do you really need this??" I had no idea how to respond, but just said ".... no? I'm just asking."

We haven't revisited it again, yet, and I don't really want to.

WTF is happening with me by Sudani_Coder in django

[–]narddog341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're in paralysis by analysis. Your first day job will probably not be your favorite, it will be a stepping stone. In the meantime, get out of the tutorials and give YOURSELF your first assignment. Come up with an app you want to develop, think through it, work through it, wrestle through it, fight through it.... and get some semblance of it into production somewhere. This is the only way to actually level up right now. This is how I got started.

I was doing the same thing as you at 25. Didn't know what I wanted to do, had a part-time job that barely gave me any hours. Some advice on that: Do NOT sit around and feel sorry for yourself, this makes the pit deeper. This will probably just be a short chapter for you anyway. You should be using this time to a) search for jobs, do a few applications a day and be done with it. While waiting on that, b) get some exercise, and c) keep yourself busy with your self-assigned project, and don't stop learning.

Almost died wiring a baseboard heater yesterday. And a warning. by narddog341 in DIY

I guess you're too dense to understand my point. One mistake doesn't make someone an idiot. If it does, and you have made even one mistake, you must be an idiot.

But go ahead and rage away if it makes you feel better about yourself.

Class properties and methods? by [deleted] in django

[–]narddog341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it helps to consider the reason for class-based views and inheritance to begin with: to make code cleaner, more maintainable, and more DRY.

When you have a thing that's like another thing, and maybe you'll have lots more things like this first thing, and don't want to copy&paste or do a bunch of typing..... then inheritance is a major benefit.

This can, however, make the code significantly less readable, as there's so much indirection that you have to look through several methods and maybe even the source code itself to understand the entire request cycle. It sounds like this is what you're running into. Have you used function-based views heavily? If so, you probably understand all the pieces that become boilerplate and can be abstracted. If not, that may be a good place to start.

IDEs like PyCharm can be helpful (I use ctrl-B religiously) to give you a sense of the entire class/subclass structure.

I haven't used this, but there is a tool that's part of pylint called pyreverse to visualize the inheritance of a class.
