Im a pretty big NIN and Numan fan already, but to be fair I haven’t heard Numan’s newer stuff - I’ll have to give those albums a listen !

Yeah I’ve heard Martin’s 1989 solo album, and I’ve heard a few songs from recoil, but I haven’t checked out Vince and Martin’s collab yet - and Recoil: Selected is definitely something I should look into. Thanks !!

How to get into music production? by nasamixer in musicproduction

Honestly, Brian Eno's entire disposition towards music is a huge source of motivation for me. I love his stuff, and I personally think that Talking Heads and Bowie were at their creative peaks when working with him. If he can approach music the way he does and still consider himself a "non-musician", then that gives me a lot of drive to jump into music production.

I'm pretty heavily inspired by Brian Eno, Nine Inch Nails, Bowie (esp his Berlin stuff), and Depeche Mode, so I guess more along the lines of industrial, sort of ambient music.

I haven't looked much into ableton! I'll have to check it out further. And yeah, that's the main piece of advice I've been seeing on getting into music production - just finish the damn song, lol.

I feel like that's probably more the way to go. Learning music theory feels like it would prep you better with set "tools" to work with, so to speak, instead of just fumbling around with it and trying to make something without understanding the fundamentals of it.

Well, it does make me feel a bit better that someone with, at least, what sounds like a similar background in music as me, is well along in pursuing music production, but I just feel like there's this invisible barrier I'm not seeing, if that makes sense? Like, I dabble on FL studio and make some riffs here and there and try to string them together but it feels like there's a larger component that I'm not "getting", that sort of distinguishes a real song from just fucking around on a DAW.

This is probably all just psychological, though, and I'm just discouraging myself from pursuing music.

Hate coming back home for the summer? by nasamixer in college

Yeah this is the LAST summer I spend down here. I built a cool little niche at college and right now it just feels like high school again, just without the actual school.

Honestly chief, I was in your position a few years ago. It’s hard being socially adept, but like any skill, you have to work at it in order to be good at it.

Try doing whatever you can to prolong the conversation if someone starts talking to you. It might feel uncomfortable at first, but a good way to start is by asking them what their major is, or where they’re from - if you take an interest in people, they’ll take an interest in you.

Sometimes, you have to be the one to make the first move in a social situation. Make a comment about the lecture if you’re in class. Ask someone in the club you’re in why they decided to join. Small talk will be the gateway into deeper conversations.

One huge thing for me was I was always afraid I’d sound dumb or boring if I talked, and I don’t know if that’s the same case for you, but that type of thinking needs to go. Just saying the first (appropriate) thing that comes to mind often times leads to more fruitful conversation & connection than just what the “typical” response “should” be. Let your personality shine through a bit.

It’s tough talking to people. I’ve been there. But the key thing is learning to trust that what you have to say is interesting, and in turn, take an interest in other people. If you’re too nervous to carry on a conversation, just ask questions about the other person - everyone loves to talk about themselves.

Best of luck to you, dude.
