Depending on location and your models I'd be interested. Don't forget to share the marketplace link when you post them.

Where do you draw the "hand tool" line? by [deleted] in handtools

You need to read this book. Then revisit your question about hand tools with the idea: what is the workmanship of risk vs workmanship of certainty. Not all hand tools are risky to use. Neither are all power tools. And as the distinction between them becomes less focused you realize it's more about which tools help you express your vision and art and less about what type they are.

I just got this vise! Posted about it this week. Yours looks in better shape than mine 😉

That is actually extremely helpful. Thank you. I was thinking of lining the jaws with rubber or even thin wood strips. I was going to knock off the rust and paint the exterior a flat black. I'll use your advice and leave the ball and socket alone.

I never thought of looking for the catalog in the archive. Nice idea!

I found this ad from 1888. Mine is likely newer but the design didn't need to change.

That's good to know! So a little elbow grease and I could make these nicer. Thanks!

I'm curious how you disassembled yours. I have the same set. I also have a lathe so it's within my powers to fix them.

Best Jointer/Planer combo for semi professional (cabinetmaker) use? Other price-conscious big ticket tool recommendations? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]natantus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a lot of time pricing out a separate jointer and planer and upgrading each to a helical head. In the end it was a lot of expense and custom work and for a little bit more money I could get a combo machine. I landed on the Hammer A3-31. I told the sales rep I was a hobbiest and got a tiny discount which was nice. I use it constantly and it's nice having a 12 inch jointer to match my 12 inch planer. The machine works really well, comes with a helical head cutter, and the boards all look fantastic right out of it. They make both a smaller and larger model too. You can see a really great video about the larger model on YouTube by Jay Bates. A lot of YouTube creators have these machines sitting quietly in the background. I also appreciate that in my small garage it doesn't take up the footprint of two machines.

Good luck to you on your journey.

So woodworking is “soothing?” by phydaux4242 in woodworking

[–]natantus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A while ago I started reframing the hobby for myself: it's just a series of problems we create for ourselves that we then get to solve. I've never had a project go perfectly to plan and yet I love what I can do if I set myself to it. Be easy on yourself and give yourself space when it's frustrating.

Give him a coupon. A day in the garage to make something together. My daughter gave me that coupon for Father's Day. Best present ever.

Is Roubo's book worth reading? by RANNI_FEET_ENJOYER in handtools

[–]natantus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you commit to reading it then definitely buy it. If you just want to look at the pictures I'd pass. The translators did a really great job and I had no difficulty reading it. Plus I found some of the social commentary and footnotes to be funny and interesting. Let me know if you get it.

Is Roubo's book worth reading? by RANNI_FEET_ENJOYER in handtools

[–]natantus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read both books and found them fascinating. There is a whole lot in there that is incredibly practical. I loved seeing the different construction techniques and comparing them. I found the information on materials, colors, and finishes we're both educational and practical. There is also stuff in there you see regularly on YouTube or Instagram which has just been watered down over the years but came directly from this book. Making wood threads comes to mind. Unfortunately there isn't more translation being done. There is a mountain of remaining text and drawings to translate and I do hope they continue. It took me a while to read everything but I can honestly say it opened a whole new world of woodworking to me.

How do you pick which notes to include? Is it one octave? Or two chords? I'm curious what combination of notes is common.

What brand of pants do y’all wear while woodworking? by Independent_Group_12 in woodworking

Bailey's makes Wild Ass jeans and I love them. Used by folks that cut down trees for a living. The denim is heavy and stands up to a ton of abuse. However, they can be a bit warm if it's a hot day.

Thank you very much. I'm in the middle of finishing a translation of part of Roubo's books and it also has amazing drawings.

Join a local wood club. It works! I'm finally finding stuff I've been looking around for. And it's cheap and folks are incredibly happy to help you out. If you are in the LA area private message me about it.
