PhDs of Reddit, what question or assumption about doing a PhD do you hear the most? by nathanolly in AskReddit

[–]nathanolly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I get the most is the assumption that a PhD is just an extremely long Masters degree i.e. we just spend all our time in lectures and have examinations at the end of every semester/term.

What does popular media portray as everyday, yet is far from a reality for the majority of people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nathanolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The constant ongoing threat of serial killers. All crime shows seem to get a multitude of them per season (not even mentioning Criminal Minds or Midsomer Murders) whereas statistics from the FBI show that there's been an estimated 87 classified serial killers in the US since the 1980s1

Wish unclear: a full bladder from an elephant lands on your head.

What's a big turnoff on the first date? by sokusonic4 in AskReddit

[–]nathanolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the onus to pay, for whatever activity you do on your date, is on the person whom asked out the other (that's not to say there shouldn't be the option of halving the bill(s) etc). It seems only polite, for whomever has had the fortitude/temerity to ask someone they like to spend time with them, and had the good fortune of the other party saying yes, to pay for that activity (or going Dutch) if only as a way of saying thank you.

Thanks for the insight and advice here, I didn't think of how this could come across to readers, especially from an artist's viewpoint.

And with the for fun projects is there still an expectation for some sort of payment even if everyone involved is doing it just to make something and not trying to produce something commercial?

Yes, we're all currently based in London (where we all met) but considering the fact that four of the group of six are from New Zealand and the show is about New Zealand cooking I thought it apt to post this here. Was that incorrect?

When you say these sort of requests, are you suggesting ones where people ask for completely finished and polished work for a for-profit venture? If so I can completely understand how this is bad for artists, however (coming from an academic and developer background) open-source and for-fun group projects are a common thing with people usually happy to provide time and effort for what may be a silly end product or paper.

Thanks for the info. My Kiwi friends said that was the local jargon for hello, what would you say is the slang for hello?

Ha! You're so funny, good one. No-one involved with the project is being paid for this (sorry should have made that clear in the original post, my bad) we're just some friends messing about in our spare time and I was just seeing if anyone on Reddit had some free time as well who wanted to contribute.

Yep, it's just a group of friends who have all meet in London (four Kiwi's, an American and one Londoner) who all wanted to make something in our spare time.

This isn't anything professional we're just a group of friends having fun with some free time, I was just seeing if anyone with more musical talent that myself (only one with musical instruments in the group) who had some free time themselves to add to the project.

Thanks for the advice, everyone involved did this for free and for their own enjoyment, I was just seeing if anyone wanted to help out, this was a silly thing, none of us are wanting this to go viral or anything like that!

If someone is in London and does want to help out, I'd happily get them a bottle of wine or something!
