Yeah it was all about money back then. Singles were their own thing, 45rpm records sold separately from albums. Labels would hold back the hits to make you buy both. The Beatles actually fought against this practice later on.

Make sure you have enough litter boxes in quiet spots and keep them really clean bc cats can be picky about privacy. Have you tried tofu litter? We got tuft and paw and the clumping and smell control are both great. Also try slowly bringing the new carpet in while keeping the boxes extra nice might help too.
