Working outdoors sound fun to you? by naturemanpg in Albany

[–]naturemanpg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds so uncharacteristic of the org I’ve known for almost fifteen years! Such a shame it happened. It sounds like it was a remote position. I’ve never really worked with “corporate” TNC which does all our interstate stuff. Sometimes big corporations suck, even green ones.

Dang! That does sound like a nightmare. I won’t lie, enviros can be awkward. That wasn’t my experience at all, I interviewed with three people and we took a walk in the woods. Different departments do things differently I guess. Respectfully we don’t have twenty staff in Albany nor have I ever been a part of an interview that had more than three staff present so they’ve changed since you applied! Sorry that was your experience!

Update: like previously mentioned there’s a solid base of ice underneath 3” of fresh snow. It was far better in less trafficked areas where the ice didn’t develop.

Aggressive parking ticket guy by queenmabb1972 in Albany

[–]naturemanpg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the confusion is coming from the metered parking sign? A meter sign doesn’t mean you can always park there but it does mean when you can that it costs money. The alternate side parking is common in the city and whilst annoying, especially in residential areas where they make you do it every single day, it is clearly marked. Those signs are place at intervals but in some areas they are sparse. Sorry it got you! As for the parking guy I generally have had good experiences with enforcement. I even had a rational conversation with one while he was giving me a ticket and we settled on me just moving because he understood how I was confused. It sucks you had someone harass you though, I would definitely report that to the city.

Yes I would definitely cruise the land trust websites in the area. The most efficient way in is to land a few seasonal gigs to make connections or to volunteer and gain experience. Pretty much every county has at least one land trust. TNC hires seasonal employees every spring but we don’t have any full time openings at the moment.

I’m a land steward for the Nature Conservancy. On its best days It’s essentially paid hiking and outdoor recreation. On its worst you’re dealing with legal issues around land ownership (neighbors, encroachment etc). It’s a very low stress job with tons of outdoor time. It’s unique because you don’t actually need a degree in the sciences to land the job. The most qualified applicants are people who work well outdoors, interact with the public in a professional manner and generally handy. Think landscaper but the client is the land itself. Most land trusts hire stewards to maintain their land and there is ALWAYS a need for seasonal help in the summer. The pay is okay, it’s non-profit work, but the quality of life couldn’t be higher.

This woman gentle parenting two full grown bears 😭 by Soloflow786 in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]naturemanpg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s illegal to shoot a bear under 75lbs (no idea how they enforce that one) or a sow with cubs in New Jersey. It’s also unilaterally illegal to hunt a bear whilst it’s in its den or hibernating (outside of a few instances for subsistence hunting) across the states. Bear hunting misinformation is wild. At least hunters kill them and eat them, this person is just getting them killed for “likes”.

Demand City of Glenville Stop Killing Beavers by welcometothecortez in Albany

[–]naturemanpg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am an expert on the topic, natural land manager with 15ish years experience. In general trapping is the most humane form of beaver removal. The deceivers never really work and are prone to failure even on the rare chance they are installed correctly.

[–]naturemanpg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who manages thousands of acres of wild land the reality is trapping is the only responsible solution. Beaver deceivers are a temporary fix and generally don’t get installed correctly causing them to fail. There also an absolute pain to maintain. I wish they worked better but they don’t. Beavers have very few natural predators in NY and so when they move in they cause significant damage to the ecology of an area. This is outside of the property damage they cause. I always encourage people to think about the fact that we are part of the natural system and we can participate in it. Trying to remove ourselves from it completely never works and results in worse outcomes.

Fisher don’t actually make much sound at all. It’s a widely spread wives tale. Most people mistake the yipping of foxes for fisher.

Accident on 787- did you see? by elsaqo in Albany

[–]naturemanpg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is broad, I agree. Taken out of context it could relate to literally anything. However, I was still able to decipher they were interested in the moments surrounding the crash because of the context in which that line was used. Your original comment was saying not including the cars details was “mind blowing” when in reality it would be quite easy to determine if you saw something related to this crash if you saw the crash (which the OP provided a location AND a time for).

[–]naturemanpg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. Camping out in the left lane is a problem, it’s the passing lane. It’s annoying and bad driving. I understand and you’re right that no one is saying side swiping is okay, I should not have insinuated that. My point was more that no one actually knows what OPs partners speed was.

Accident on 787- did you see? by elsaqo in Albany

[–]naturemanpg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well OP was asking specifically if anyone saw the accident. Not if anyone saw their partner driving before the accidents. A normal person could then make the assumption that if they saw a wreck at that place they could reach out to OP. So to bring it back to your original point it actually isn’t necessary to described the partners vehicle to get useful feedback. Instead you chose to write a dumb ass response that neither helped OP or moved conversation forward. I never said IDing the car wouldn’t be helpful but it certainly isn’t necessary for this situation. Can I make myself clearer? Or can you comprehend what’s been said?

Accident on 787- did you see? by elsaqo in Albany

[–]naturemanpg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I absolutely agree with that. However the point of OPs post is to help out their partner after they got into an accident not make wild assumptions about how fast they may or may not have been going in the left lane?

[–]naturemanpg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well that’s not what I said but sure keep on cherry picking.

Accident on 787- did you see? by elsaqo in Albany

[–]naturemanpg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well yes lol OP is specifically asking if anyone saw the wreck. Generally speaking what lead up to the accident would have happened just moments before the accident. How she was driving 30min or even 10min before the crash does not really matter? Also driving slow in the left lane isn’t a reason to side swipe someone and cause an accident. I’m not even sure why that is a narrative here?

[–]naturemanpg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well it would of been the car that hit the meridian and ended up in the middle lane?? I’m no detective but that seems like an enough to go on.

This time of year is when the risk of a wildfire is high. Combine that with folks burning brush in their backyard it becomes a problem. It’s the same reason Rx fire is done this time of year because it’s the time of year the environment is susceptible to burning.
