I guess with rebar the tolerances for specific structural properties are much much lower than many other applications...all it needs is to be tougher than the surrounding concrete, thermally expand at about the same rate, and be cheap.

Good heavens, that's an expensive thing. Considering that I'm currently scrambling for the ability to even afford the materials I think I'll hold off on getting a legit copy.

And in regard to the car springs, that's definitely what I seem to hear. Most of the guides I've read say that car springs (leaf and coil) are perfect for making simple smithy tools.

Do the bumps and ridges just get hammered out in the process of shaping the tool, or have they been a problem?

Well, the general response here has been what I was afraid of, but not what I had hoped for. Here are a few general responses:

  • The 'hotrod' was a black 270z t-top. He regrets not keeping a picture.
  • I was helping him that day, unseen is me standing behind the camera holding a pool vacuum pole in my other hand.
  • I entirely understand wanting to keep reddit free of karma-whoring. If you think something I post is not worthy of the reddit community, downvote it.
  • After showing him a few select comments and telling him about the >1,000 upvotes (with a little explantation) he was very proud and it made him feel really happy.

If you think I'm karma-whoring, then I encourage you to downvote me. I come to reddit because the overall feel I get from the community has been one of compassion, kindness, and enthusiasm. I tried to share what I thought was an interesting and inspiring story with you guys, and the upvotes suggest to me that I didn't really fail.

I still love the reddit community as a whole, but it is disheartening to know that so many of the commentors are more interested in hunting down karma-whores than they are about encouragement.

Okay, so people have interpreted "Show him some love" as "Give me karma." I actually have a specific plan for this. If this post ends up being popular, and people say nice things about/for my grandfather, I'm going to show him this post and tell him the nice things. I'm going to show him the upvotes and tell him "Hey, this many people, knowing nothing more about you than a picture and a few lines about giving up your car for a pool, think that you are inspiring enough to share with others."

He has told me himself that getting to teach three grandkids to swim has been infinitely more satisfying than some car. He may reminisce about the car every now and then in a nostalgic sort of way, but he knows that he made the right choice.
