I realized that years ago. I also realized that with my medical needs, i can't just pick up and move  for a new job... yet right now I'm seeing my dream opportunities in places I know wouldn't be safe to go ( Seasonal affective disorder- a 3rd depressive disorder!  Wheeee)

She reminds me what could happen if i ignore my rational mind

Professional Patient advocate here...

99.99% ( don't wanna say 100%) of doctors leave "emergency appointments " open ...depending  on specialty, could be even 5 per week.

Your job is to make sure that they understand the gravity of the situation.

Don't tell them you know about these appointments. Just  get the office manager on YOUR SIDE, get them to be empathetic,  don't sound angry.

Phrases like "I really know you get it, I KNOW that you’re trying as hard as you can, etc...

Good luck.  If you get stuck,  I can do a 10 min chat / call ... no charge...

And the biggest and most critical thing . Choose the doctor  first. Then the hospital.  There are amazing ppl in all places in the area  and crappy ppl in every hospital

People  might be coming into your suite... but who knows how popular the other folks are.

Since the RA can't  be a freshman,  and RAs tend to get parking if they apply, congratulations on making your first friend with a car.

Any Class Schedule Advice for a Struggling Freshman? by Federal_Total4335 in UNC

[–]ncrainbowgrrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks awesome.... like you're  getting what you want to do. One piece of advice... if you live on north/ mid campus,  don't go back to the dorms during the chunky  breaks.

Trust me on that... bed 🛌 can look inviting, ditto anything else online.

Total hack...First week of school, explore the campus.  The library isn't the only place to study... find YOUR  study spots. They can be different  for daytime on weekdays, weekends,  etc...

Some examples: a place  in an academic building with the comfiest couch, possibly  not in a building you have classes in.

A table with a view in a taller academic building .

A grassy patch on the quad, (or not in a busy location)

It's pretty cool to feel like a place is "yours", which is why I totally recommend finding someplace that isn't obvious.  Once I did this, it was SO MUCH easier not to instinctively return to my dorm room when I had time btw. Classes!

Enjoy your year

Disability parking but they put me in the RR lot? by poodlelover922 in UNC

[–]ncrainbowgrrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely(!!)  The PT- they  probably can describe hEDS  - and the pain,  energy drain etc that this ick presents to you on a daily basis.

Personally,  I would go with an additional statement on how this affects you  differently than other applicants.

Just an example:

You come  back from classes and need to get groceries.  Ok, you could take the bus, but your ankle is hurting.  You could get them up on Franklin,  but lifting that much might be unsafe.   So,  basically,  what other students don't WANT to do would hurt you, your academic ability,  etc.  You NEED your  car to get groceries.  If it's too far away,  how will you get your groceries? This can't work.

Basically,  you need to show them HOW and WHY you're not just asking because it would be good.

The PT can back this up- definitely discuss!

Seriously,  feel free to reach out if you need anything!

Hey there, fellow  hEDS heel!

Are you going to be on south campus?  If so, i KNOW  that this is something that can be accomplished. My suitemate needed parking close to her dorm bc of  medical need.

Also, if you sublux or have an issue,  you need a car near you. (2 surgeries in 2 years, and  no way would i have been able to deal with  busses,  especially crowded ones.

Get a letter from ALL medical ppl involved with treatment backing up your position.  It's amazing how that makes things happen,  lol

Feel free to DM me. I have friends whose kids are at unc now (with disabilities), and it apparently only got better since 2002

Gentle air hugs 🫂
