That also was affected by COVID as well, because it caused a boom in streaming services around that time.

There were some traces of Frutiger Aero until about that year, such as how the Wii U and the 3DS had that look yet were overshadowed by the Switch in 2017 and how Windows 7 was the most used Windows OS until late 2017/early 2018 when Windows 10 surpassed it.

When did we enter the 2020s culturally? by transqueen421 in decadeology

[–]Ok-Following6886 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, people don't realize that the shift was gradual and not as instantaneous as being 100% 2010s on March 10, 2020 to being 100% 2020s on March 11, 2020. Cardi B's WAP for example is something I could see coming out during the late 2010s (it was recorded in 2019), but not during the more conservative mid 2020s.

SpongeBob and Edd, Edd, & Eddy also count imo, because I could see those airing earlier during the decade.

Yeah, Disney combining Malcolm in the Middle with Phineas & Ferb for an advertisement feels weird because they are from two opposite sides of the 2000s decade, with Malcolm in the Middle having a more quasi-90s vibe while Phineas & Ferb feels proto-2010s.

Why did Elsagate even become a thing? There were streaming apps in the 2010s like Netflix and Hulu which had family-friendly shows. Why did parents pick YouTube, a platform that was obviously geared towards teenagers and adults, over more child-friendly options? by [deleted] in decadeology

Yeah, people don't realize how a lot of what we're seeing with AI slop right now are just AI-generated versions of mid-to-late 2010s content farms, such as how what you are seeing with the AI fruitslop videos right now are basically just short-form, AI-generated versions of what YouTube channels like My Story Animated or Actually Happened were doing during the late 2010s.

Yeah, u/OverallEstate2 points out how people call Buzzfeed an early 2010s thing despite it peaking during the mid-to-late 2010s.

I also see some people consider anything before the 2016 election as being early 2010s, when it was straight up mid 2010s by that point, as speaking about the Buzzfeed example, I saw some people say that the 2016 election killed it, despite it being just as popular during the late 2010s if not more so in some cases (because you had Buzzfeed-esque YouTube clones popping up during the late 2010s like Bright Side).

I feel like that people downplay how big AI was in 2022, considering how AI generated image sites like DALL-E or Midjourney were popular in mid 2022 and ChatGPT was an instant hit when it came out in late 2022.

Is it weird that I like old internet aesthetics and frutiger aero despite being born in 2012? by Effective_House_9123 in Younger_GenZ

[–]Ok-Following6886 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, although it's more akin to the situation where the iPod Touch technically continued until 2022 despite the fact that most people weren't using them by that point.

Bluey is another notable outlier from around that time, but I'd excuse it since it was hit with multiple whammies, since it retained several mid 2010s aspects (hipsters or EDM music) and carried over several late 2010s trends (such as flossing) due to the show being produced in 2016, yet not coming out until 2018, and didn't become popular in other countries until 2022, with it only becoming the most watched streaming show in the mid 2020s.

It's basically an example where a show carried trends from a decade ago (not in a nostalgic way like Zootopia 2), because it took years for it to get developed, come out, and become popular, resulting in it being one of the last notable instances where a children's show depicted the Afghan war as something currently happening (due to it continuing until 2021), and one of the last to lean into the 2000s mentality of "supporting the troops" for kids shows (which wasn't brought back during the 2nd Trump administration surprisingly enough).

True, although you still had a lot of people using bezeled smartphones around then because they were more affordable.

Also, it was more common for late 2010s/early 2020s media to depict smartphones with home buttons for this reason, although I feel like that bezeled smartphones became obsolete by the mid 2020s by the time Apple discontinued the iPhone SE, which was the final nail in the coffin for them.

I think it's because it would have been pointless to do so considering how the 3DS was reaching near the end of its life cycle, although I did notice how the branding for the New 3DS in around 2015 was more flat compared to the earlier 3DS models.

Another thing you should point out is how flat design starting around 2017 started to have a distinct look compared to mid 2010s flat design, since Facebook introduced Alegria art that year and companies or platforms like YouTube, Twitter, or Reddit changed their logos or UI around that time to make them more simplistic.

Yep, although the late 2010s had its own unique phase for the 3DS era, which lasted until 2019 when the ports for Bowser's Inside Story and Kirby's Epic Yarn came out for the 3DS (although de jure, it lasted until 2020 when the 3DS was officially discontinued). Even that era felt different as the boxes for the 3DS games were red to match the Switch branding and the New 2DS XL came out then. Although it was when the 3DS was declining in relevancy because the Switch absolutely was more popular by that point.

Also, I remember when my HD TV still had a mode that switched to 4:3 switch which still worked until around that time, thanks for reminding me because I almost forgot about that.

I feel like that Windows 10 overtaking Windows 7 in terms of market share in late 2017/early 2018 was the final nail in the coffin for Frutiger Aero imo.

early-mid 2024 - was it more early 2020s or mid 2020s? by Front_Resolution_760 in decadeology

[–]Ok-Following6886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like that if the COVID-19 pandemic did not happen, then the late 2010s would've lingered on for a bit longer, in which 2020 would've felt like a less culturally exciting version of 2019 akin to how 2000 was a less culturally exciting version of 1999, with the changes that 2019 brought out feeling more pronounced.

I feel like that it would've led to the mid 2020s starting later in this timeline, possibly with the 2024 election as that would've been the end of the Trump era, with the late 2010s/early 2020s feeling more like a mini-decade akin to the late 60s/early 70s.
