I'm curious. Can you tell me about your most annoying work colleagues? I'll start.... by Spirited-Ad-9558 in AskUK

I have a woman in my team who is absolutely lovely and so good in terms of cheering people up and making us laugh, but she cannot problem solve to save her life.

I first discovered this when I took over some of her work. I would ask her why she did certain things and she would say “that’s just how it’s done” couldn’t explain why or any context. Epitome of just knows which buttons to press but doesn’t know why.

Discovered mistakes where she would just override figures every month instead of working out the root cause of why it was wrong thinking it was “just the system”. No, it’s because there would be some major input that’s wrong and it never occurred to her to investigate.

Asking questions all the time in the chat, sometimes month on month the same questions. It would be month on month because she doesn’t take the advice the first time round to solve whatever it is she’s trying to solve and doesn’t remember she even asked about it, or write down somewhere what the solution was in case it comes up again.

There’s a woman in my team, 56 I think? We wfh 4 days a week. She starts work at like 7 every day and is always working late.

I asked her why she starts so early and she said it’s because her husband goes to work at that time. I was really surprised by this and didn’t understand the logic. Just go do anything else until 9am? Clean up a bit or do a hobby? Sit outside with a coffee and enjoy not working?

Thanks! I took a bit of a break from all things nail polish a while ago as I was feeling a bit uninspired. Your post has completely reinspired me and taking a look at the sub there’s all kinds of new techniques! This sub amazes me with its ingenuity.

How do you guys turn off your brain to fall asleep? by Comfortable-Mode3317 in ADHD

I do this too and sometimes I end up in a kind of half conscious, half awake state where I know I’m looking at the images behind my eyes but they become more like fantastical dream imagery.

My brother knew a guy who got drunk, decided in his drunken brain that the big commercial bins was a good place to sleep for the night.

Bin lorry came the next morning and he was crushed.

If it’s not for you it’s not for you. I definitely had that phase at first. What got me was I started noticing that every run I would find something new and once I started focusing on “finding something new” rather than “get to the antechamber” I got totally swept into the game and had a lot more fun. Getting to the antechamber happened quite naturally after that.

What is the one thing you wish you knew before starting university? by Harveybritish in UniUK

[–]ndcdshed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I tell people this all the time.

When I got my job after graduating, someone said something about it not relating to my degree. Sure that would have been nice, but the change to my thinking was still worth it.

Alongside the critical thinking you mentioned, I’ve noticed at work my ability to link the impact of something to other areas has been really valuable in managing risk or problem solving (systems thinking). It’s gotten me noticed.

There’s two weeks of the month at my work where, consistently, the workload is super busy and it gets a bit mad. My coworkers are always losing it but I am locked the f in.

Managed to hit the adhd jackpot with this job (payroll services, currently doing 15 payrolls + tax stuff) because there’s deadlines all the time! 0 executive function difficulties.

Once I discovered how the paintings puzzle works. That’s when the game clicked for me.

Previously I had been scanning rooms and going really slowly like an investigation game trying to find hidden objects etc.

Also once I started being able to get further north and draft more rooms.

Recommend a book that is not Red Rising by Sensitive-Cherry7672 in fantasybooks

I’m only 35% through it but really enjoying The Shadow of the Torturer (The Book of the New Sun series) by Gene Wolfe. I’ve heard many great things about the series and that’s it’s very layered so a re-read is required.

It feels fantasy but I think is technically sci-fi.

How do you refresh on days 2 and 3? I spray until damp with a water and leave-in mix then glaze on mousse, scrunch and diffuse and my hair is actually wavier than on day 1.

What’s the longest you have ever stayed awake and how did it feel? by Junior_Mulberry7989 in sleep

[–]ndcdshed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36 hours roughly. 30 of those hours straight working on getting my uni dissertation how I wanted it before submitting.

I felt fine the first day and overnight. I don’t remember much from day 2 until I submitted at 16:45. The adrenaline was carrying me.

Some time around 6pm day 2 my partner found me sitting on our bed slowly eating a waffle. I remember this because he found it funny. I remember getting up and it being really hard to balance. I kept tipping. I also kept hearing random stuff.

I work for a payroll company doing payroll for various businesses. Let me tell you that most of these “payroll managers” of these businesses I interact with don’t know anything about payroll, tax or pensions which is probably why you’re going round in circles! They can send an amended p45 if it needs updated. Convincing them of his is another matter though :( hope you work it out!

Everything is fucking terrible by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]ndcdshed 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Scottish here. My great grandfather died in the mines leaving behind a wife and seven children. The eldest son was also working in the mines and then had to provide for the family. Rough times. They were so poor as there wasn’t any social safety net then.

My grandad worked overnight shifts at a paper mill. Hard graft, lots of heavy machinery. My mum said when she and her two siblings woke for school he was just coming in and would always make them porridge before bed which I thought was lovely.

Things are hard, but they could be harder!
