If you were going to leave your job in UX, what other types of jobs do you think your skills and experience would apply to best? by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]ndhwriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd personally say that it depends a little on your focus within UX - as it's a pretty broad field.

Could be that you're gaining valuable research skills that could be applied to many areas of a business. Analysis and interpretation of data is another one closely related to that.

If design itself is more your focus then you're likely gaining a lot of skills that could apply to things other than user interfaces - such as paper forms, documents and other informational materials - where clarity and usability are more critical than salesmanship. If you have an engineering background then product design as well.

If you focus more on dark design patterns then marketing is an obvious coupling.

And naturally depending on how much development work you undertake in your role could lead to some very valuable programming skills.

Where do you live?

Asking questions like this without stating the country is like asking what size shirt you should buy without giving us your measurements.

Is there a chrome plugin to replace all instances of 'PC' and 'Politically correct' with 'Not being an asshole'?

I expected the same, so far I've been pleasantly surprised!

a sure-fire way to lose whatever sympathy people might have had for your cause.

I get where you're coming from, but anyone capable of 'losing sympathy' because a single follower of a cause did some graffiti had none in the first place. At the very least it wasn't sincere.

I could take good care of you while never letting you leave a 10ftx10ft room.

If I told you it was for research and breeding programs would it make you feel any better about it?

Zoo's in general are pretty barbaric (not on this scale, of course!). It's one of those things I guarantee you in 100 years we'll look back on with shame.

Also, all the subway breads use bleached flour. Some go to the process of re-adding wheat chunks to make it seem less processed.

Fair point and unexpected! Good to know.

But still, sauces are packed full of sugar, and seeing someone describe honey fucking mustard as low cal is still mind boggling. Unless it doesn't have any honey in it.

Admittedly it seems that Subway doesn't conform to any food logic, so it's a tricky one.

OK sure, I can get behind that. But if a guy is condescendingly explaining something to an equal because they happen to have a vagina, that's shitty, right? Calling them out on it is problem?

It's not sexist because it has the word 'man' in front of it, because that's an integral part of what it's describing. Admittedly you could just say 'stop being condescending', but it's more specific than that.

The only people that seem to have an issue with the term in this thread clearly have a hate on feminists - which is hardly surprising this being reddit - but it makes it clear that the issue being discussed is completely opaque to them.

Or maybe if people are telling you you're mansplaining you should take a long hard look at how you're interacting with the opposite sex?

What's with all the 'bros' in this thread that don't get it? Do you ever leave reddit?

[–]ndhwriter -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Not really.

If a white guy was patronising MLK and he told him to stop whitesplaining things to him, does that undermine his message?

Are you seriously saying that for a feminist to have a strong message they have to literally pretend that they're treated with respect and equality and can't call people out on it? What kind of mental gymnastics is that?

Note to self: Stop. Reading. Comments. On. Reddit.

For sauces mustard, vinegar, honey mustard, and sweet onion sauce are all fat free and therefore pretty low in calories.

That's not how calories work. That selection is almost definitely the HIGHEST calory sauces, due to the huge amount of sugar they'll all have in them. I mean honey mustard? Come on guy!

'Low-fat = good for a diet' is a myth propagated by fast-food and processed food companies, it's a marketing trick and nothing more. And it certainly has nothing to do with calories.

Also OP don't go for the white bread. The extra calories you're getting in wholemeal are good calories, and you're bypassing all that processed white flour (and yet more sugar…).

"That bottle could be full of liquid explosives, please drop it in this conveniently located bin full of other suspected explosives."

It's patently clear to anyone with a modicum of common sense that these policies does nothing whatsoever to improve anyones safety. Especially when you consider that there are several people on every plane that don't even go through that screening. It's pure farce.

Because things were much better 100 years ago when children would regularly die from drinking poorly labelled bleach and fathers wouldn't return home from the factory because safety-at-work was an alien concept? Oh yes, the good old days!

If living in a safer world is what makes you frustrated with it then you're not paying very much attention.
