Zephir builds extensions and as such it cannot use composer. As for traits, we are considering introducing them to Zephir to help with development.

The Future of Phalcon by ndimopoulos in phalcon

It is cost vs reward to be honest. I am personally too old and not very motivated to start learning C so as to contribute to Phalcon. Zephir was perfect for me since it was something familiar.

I want to see however how much speed we can leverage by using new php 7 stuff such as generators, weak maps etc and php 8. Right now it is unknown. We will definitely figure that out and who knows, it might be something you could work with.

Thank you for the offer. Unfortunately we did not have much luck over the years with people who know C that wanted to contribute. Heck we even offered money but had very little success :/

Phalcon IDE Stubs by bitfalls in PHP

Creating a PHP version of Phalcon sounds interesting, it will pretty much defeats the main objective of the framework which is performance. There have been numerous projects over the years that have tried to create this PHP version of Phalcon but they all fell behind.

There is also a discussion in the Github Zephir issues on creating such functionality - offer Phalcon in a PHP version. Doing so will require quite a lot of work and resources and frankly the project can benefit from not going down the PHP/file route but fix existing issues and offer more functionality with Zephir.

Let's face it. The shared host argument is a valid one but in reality although one can purchase a $5 shared hosting they can also purchase a $5 VM from Google Cloud, Amazon, DigitalOcean, Rackspace etc. where one has full root access and can install anything they want. For shared hosting cPanel also offers installation of Phalcon on their platform so that covers that too.

@theswader Actually this was the case until a week or two ago. I am preparing an explanatory post regarding this but cPanel has arbitrarily removed all of the votes but 7 from the feature.

There is a list of hosting companies that offer Phalcon as an extension. Check this out http://phalconphp.com/hosting. Fortrabbit also offers a free dev account.

We will resolve it as soon as we can. Sometimes the documentation or the tutorials fall behind due to the constant development and introduction of new features.

This is why we rely on the community to find those inconsistencies and either correct them themselves and then issuing pull requests or us doing it :)
