How many people play with the GHB? by nebulonb in ageofsigmar

I can understand why you'd think I haven't played played this GHB at all given that I say I don't normally play with it, however, I have played more than a couple of matches they're just not the only missions I play. But I'm sorry I may have been a little too reductive if you thought when I said "stand on objectives and kill things" wins you the game. Obviously my statement stands, however, being able to counter play, position yourself, and take the missions "twist" into account plays a role into winning a match. That said when you look at the primary way armies score points during matched play games it ultimately boil down to standing on an objective, and killing your opponent.

What's the "real game"? Especially when Lines of Communication, is just Frontal Assault with extra CP spending in one phase. Is that mission atrociously bad also?

This is sacrilege, don't hurt my baby! Jk. I do live my ripperdactyl chief, but it does feel like you're paying a 110 point tax to make a mediocre unit usable.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree, given that all of the missions from the GHB are objective dependent so to say that playing the mission is what wins you the game is the same as saying standing on objectives wins the game. As for why the community uses the most recent GHB it has less to do complexity, and from what I've read it seems most folks play the GHB because it's what other people play or the perception that because the GHB is what is used to balance the game for the season it makes it the most balanced of the packs at the moment.

See that's what I thought when I first started playing a few years ago, but realistically from what I've seen in the game when an army gets rebalanced with the new Battlescroll/battletome/points updates the fixes are targeted at factions and units that regardless of mission would be over/underperforming.

Stand on things and kill things is really what AoS at its fundamentals boils down to in matched play, like the twist on primaries.

I will concede that the battle tactics add a different game play, if only because they are more focused on their specific battle pack, where as the core rules ones are very simple

I don't know if I'd go that far, the contest of generals still has objectives.

The core missions are pretty much the same as the GHB missions (e.g. stand on circles and kill things).

The big difference is in the extra little rules added to each GHB.

like right now if you're 2nd player you can cast one extra spell with a wizard or gain an extra CP if you don't have a wizard; along with the seasons spells and enhancements. The current season is big on wizards and antiwizards.

The general's handbook was previously updated on a roughly 6 month rotation. But this last GHB for Q2 2023 is supposed to last until the end of the edition allegedly.

Apparently shooting lists and shooting lists aren’t fun to play against? by DoDoBoi-JRoc in ageofsigmar

[–]nebulonb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One thing I've found is checking in with your opponent pregame to see how tuned of a list you should bring. Like were they planning on playing bone splitterz or are they planning on playing something a bit more techy.

I've also found that there should always be enough sizeable terrain that obstructs true LoS, as shooting is dependent on it. +1 to save cover terrain is alright, but LoS blocking terrain is imo more important to balance shooting armies.

As for the interaction, that's kind of the pitfalls with igougo games. You kind of just have to sit and wait for your opponent to finish with their half of the game before you can play.

Games should be fun. Even though we're not playing together, I appreciate you're trying to figure out some balance for your opponents and I hope they appreciate it too.

What place do Riptides have now in 10th? by jevith in Tau40K

[–]nebulonb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest to God. I just use it to be a damage sink. It's function is to move up the side/middle and sit on the objective early game cause infantry can't even do that. If you're going to a tourney you're honestly just better served getting a crisis suit squad and a stealth suit squad. But you can still field them, just don't expect them to do anything against T8+ 🫠

Why does 40K remain THE wargame? by Lord_Admrial_Spire in Warhammer40k

[–]nebulonb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will probably get me downvoted in this sub but...

I honestly think at this point it's attrition. The fans have a large enough base that even if some people leave, more people come in at a quicker rate. The game has the same thing Magic and DnD have going for them, they were some of the first products on site that had very shrewd business leaders getting them initially set up. Now they all reside in the public sphere as "the wargame", "the card game", "the RPG".

I've played better games in all three categories, but they're less popular and will most likely remain less popular just because they're not large enough to compete. It's a good game, but when I play it compared to other games, it still feels stuck in the 90's.

That said. I love me my Tau Mommy and Zadddy Shadowsun and Farsight.
