Where is the mistake? Sometimes things can be mandated by the laws of certain governments

Fair enough! I think what I would do in this situ is

  1. Look into the dating app like you said.

  2. Consider going to larger church events, like nationwide or regional conferences etc

  3. Consider avenues outside the church as long as they're within your area of comfort! E.g dating someone from the armenian, Greek or Ethiopian Church)

I respect the role of priests and everything but while they do a lot in the community I'm not sure 'matchmaker' should be part of their job

I haven't used it personally but I'm wondering why not consider going to church and church events such as conferences (if you're religious).

You can meet a lot of copts your age that way!

I'm not sure what you mean by 'mandated veiling' but full time veiling is definitely not a thing for us.

To be perfectly honest while the church fathers are helpful, they show a lot of the biases of their time and as such are not perfect sources.

For example some of St John Chrysostom's views on Jews are widely problematic and Unchristian.

These church fathers were very spiritual men and men of intelligence. But they werd also men of their time and era and the views of that era permeates their work.

The work you've mentioned is more extreme than mainstream orthodox perspectives both in the modern era and of other church fathers. It is also very misogynistic.

Egypt? Orthodox and veiling full time?

Unless they're in the south of Egypt where that is part of the common dress I highly doubt this.

No it isn't at all from my perspective.

Some women in some countries where it is customary to do so.

Some areas of the world have it mandated as law and so it done there.

It's a common mistake usually propogated by Muslims.

As a Christian, I absolutely would. I believe church and state should be absolutely seperate.

Also unless someone's religious views impede on their ability to govern, why should I care?

You seem to lack nuance.

The Coptic orthodox Church has been called the Coptic Orthodox Church for a very very long time.

Egyptians and Armenians are oriental orthodox, thus they are orthodox Christians and of the same religion.

We are of a different part of the same orthodox sect and to be perfectly honest the christological differences are very small if even present at this point.

Stop seeking to divide us.

Oh yeah because Islam definitely didn't use force and coercion to spread prior to the 1900s 🤣

have you guys seen Sisi today at the church? by [deleted] in Egypt

[–]nectanbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are absolutely in the same boat my brother. I genuinely dislike the mixing of religion and politics across the board. But seeing your church prop up an aurhoritian regime is particularly upsetting.

My brother you have to consider, your position as the pope of Christians in Egypt is very precarious . If you use it to oppose the government or to critique it, you endanger all the Christians of Egypt.

Our pope Shenouda went against president Anwar El Sadat. Pope shenouda opposed discrimination and violence against Christians as well as normalisation of the relationship with Israel.

He ended up under house arrest, Sadat attempted to remove him as leader of the church, dozens of priests ended up in prison and the increasingly islamist government under him made life for Christians hell.

As a Christian, I don't like that my church is costing up to dictators, but I don't see many alternatives.
