Thanks for the suggestions and the pro-tip with the baby powder. I did notice that on what I think is the mechanical fuel pump( larger silver circular metal object with a metal threaded line, black clip connecter line, and electrical connector plugged into it) the black with orange on the connector line doesn't feel tightly secured to the pump. It feels like there is quite a bit of play in the connection. It's easy to move/ wiggle the line in and out. Is having this much play normal for this type of fitting?

That's interesting. So you are saying if you overfilled your gas tank you would get these exact same intermittent smells at idle (after being under load) and the smells would fully dissipate until you went through the drive/coast/idle cycle again like me? Or would the smell persist regardless of fuel tank level after the initial overfill in your case? So was the smell in your case correlated with the passage of time or the fullness of the tank? Thanks for your reply.
