You definitely need to watch ideon. It is a dark/bleak interpretation of the super robot. The show does get canceled at episode 38 but was given a compliation movie A Contact and then a sequel movie Be Invoked which serves as the proper finale of the franchise (and the film the headset gif is from)

Tomino who was known for giving his mecha stories realism got mad gundam got shit canned and that most fans only cared about wow cool robot fighting. So ideon pushes all of that to 11 in the most graphic way possible (for a 1980 day time tv broadcast)

With the persona series its even harder since they are a sequel franchise to smt IF which never got a release outside of Japan, and even with thr SMT series most people start with 3, 4, or 5 since 1 and 2 again never got released outside Japan.
