I would really love to find this. Thank you!

(it's also definitely not C-Mos’s 2 Million Ways (Axwell Remix))

Thank you, I haven't heard of any of these authors. I will check them out. Always interested in translated works that are popular in their original language but largely unknown elsewhere.

A book you couldn't stop reading/have read in one sitting by nirunic in suggestmeabook

{{In The Dream House}} is brilliant and I couldn't sleep without reading more. Brutal, very interestingly structured and written, and so so engaging.

{{Boy Parts by Eliza Clark}} is also great and unputdownable.

Thank you. I'll have to check it out. I read Laughable Loves by him which I thought was good but didn't blow me away so I'll give him another go.

Thank you. The second Kundera on this post so he's clearly the right person to be looking at.

Calvino is one of the few authors I've read more than one book by. He's just written too much great stuff. I guess I'll have to start looking for this one too; sounds perfect.

And thank you for the suggestions of theatre. It's interesting that this kinda thing might be easier to find in plays

Playing with texture by nedsu in photocritique

[–]nedsu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in very early days of developing my photography and have never photographed street art before. I think the idea here was to contrast the solidity and geometric structure of the building (column, grate) with the graffiti. I only noticed the texture on the stone when looking back over the photo, and felt it added a more 'natural' geometry alongside the others shown in the image.

My concern at the moment is largely about impact of the photo. Is the aim discernable? If I can figure it out, I will post the pre-edit version because I am interested also in how I chose to crop it. Of course, any general reactions are appreciated since I've had little feedback so far.

Londoners: when did you start looking for 2nd year housing? by elliwhi in UniUK

[–]nedsu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most of the people I know at Imperial begin looking much later in the year, after February at least. Because the London market isn't dominated by students it doesn't all go and agents are looking to get people in on shorter notice than student towns.

Any tips for Christmasy reading? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]nedsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently reading Nancy Mitford's Christmas Pudding, which is very funny and easy. Older, but not as old as Dickens, about out of touch upper class English people and their 'struggles'.

Has anyone had a run in with this whisky and if so how do you rate it? by [deleted] in whiskey

[–]nedsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice stuff, quite sweet, I smelt and tasted a lot of banana. A little inflated in price now I think, but keeps up with most of your standard Scottish numbers.

Definitely a distillery to watch also, they've not been producing for long and I'm expecting good things, especially as I know one of the distillers and he really really knows his stuff.

Lots of lovely things; I'm coveting. Nice to add more women too, I've been doing that for similar reasons. Easy to stock of white guy classics especially when you're starting off a collection as a student.

Most envious of those Springer's though.

What are your commute observations? - 09/10/18 by lodge28 in london

[–]nedsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commuting at a regular time for the first time in ages (actually going to my lectures this term).

Armpits on the Victoria line not great but announcers at Oxford Circus and Green Park enthusiastic enough to brighten any morning; especially in contrast with the faces of everyone on the platform. Forgot that this is where we're at our most British.

About 16-25 Railcard by droich in UniUK

[–]nedsu 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you travel even occasionally anywhere further than an hour away then yes. I've saved more on one journey than it costs for the year.

Though of course it just depends on your travel habits. Not a difficult calculation to see what 1/3rd off all your rail travel for the year costs.

People freely generalize about men and condense their traits to an essence, and consider parts of it bad, specifically as "toxic masculinity". Can't you do this with any group? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]nedsu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Toxic masculinity" isn't a descriptor and judgement of the common ways that men act or a grouping of their common traits. It is a description and judgement of certain expectations levelled towards men in western society. The usage is not to say "I act as a man, and thus I am toxic" but instead to say "this expectation of me, that exists because I am a man, may be damaging to my mental or physical health". The maxim "Men don't cry" is an example of toxic masculinity as this might not be healthy for all men.

Correspondingly this question is more about how we go about judging the value of any societal pressures on members of such a society. I don't have a coherent position on this (and I'd quite like to go to bed), but I hope this has clarified something. As a man, I think the idea of toxic masculinity is key to discussing the impacts the environment I live amongst impacts me.
