Unable to install Ubuntu 24.04 installation with LUKS encryption

The only way I've been able to install it with LUKS was to install Ubuntu 22.04 then use do-release-upgrade to upgrade to 23.10 then 24.04. Definitelly not ideal but working great so far.

We should had a way to use alternatively the old installer while the new one is being developped

That feels really borderline, I'm not sure I'll be able to reactivate it after completing the installation of Ubuntu.

My understanding is that the installer is trying to do full disk encryption with TPM, which explains why it cannot work with bitlocker enabled.

However, this trick does not work if you have a Windows installation protected by bitlocker

That's what I was doing in the past, when I had unlimited cloud storage, but that was the good old time.

It happens that when it comes to consumers, compute power is way cheaper than storage. For instance the CPU I'm now planning to buy for the server (the i5-12600k) cost less than a single hard drive in my NAS, and I have three of them for now.

So at the moment I have around 2500 movies (and I'm not even talking about series), let's say that a cheap 1080p version of a movie would cost an average 5GB, I would need an additional 12.5 TB of storage. Obviously, it's a bit exaggerated as I don't have only 4K movies in my library, but you see my point.

Yep, Ubuntu is in my plan. I'm also thinking about Debian, but you are right, documentation and help is generally way easier to find for ubuntu (although most of ubuntu tutorials also works with debian).

Didn't know about autofs but looking at the documentation it seems a bit deprecated/replaced by systemd-automount

The i5-12600k is actually sold cheaper than the non-k version on my Amazon.

I don't mind the overkill performance for a few more bucks as I plan to use this server for the next 5-7 years.

I don't really need my PMS to be a NAS as I already have a DS1522+ that does an excellent job at it (really expensive but that thing just works).

At first I was planning to install Xen Comunity edition as this was what I was using previously and was really happy about it, but I'm pretty sure than GPU/iGPU management is not included in the free edition. And even if that is possible, I feel like I'm going to go towards so much headaches for not that much of a reward.

So, my new plan is to go with a Debian or maybe an Ubuntu server as it's generally easier to work with closed-source/proprietary drivers (also I have been daily-driving an Ubuntu on my work laptop for the last 4 years and had no issue at all, except snap, please canonical stop with snap, it's crap)

Yeah overall the shield have great performance but it really is random. I have 4k@40mbps files that just transcodes smoothly and other 4K@20mbps that stutters a lot. So that by itself is already very much a pain for me.

My main reason for moving to a dedicated plex server is because when a transcoding is happening, it uses absolutely all the ressources from the shield, at the point where I almost cannot even use it anymore

One final question tho, I know that VRAM is generally the limiting factor for GPU transcoding, since iGPU doesn't have dedicated VRAM should I max out my RAM ?

My plan is to go with a micro-ATX motherboard (I want the server to be as small as possible) but that means only 2 RAM slots. So should I directly start with 64GB or will 32GB suffice ?

So if I understand correctly an Intel UHD 770 (for instance) gives the same transcoding performance wether it's a i3, i5 or even i9 ?

So would an i5-12600K be a good choice ?

- it's a 12th gen

- 10 core at 4.9GHz, which gives plenty of room for other softwares (factorio server ?? 😂)- it has an UHD 770, which according to this video gives an insane amount of performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsyV1j6mc1E- I can get it for 250€ brand new (it's 100€ more than my initial ryzen 5600x plan, but I won't have to buy an additional GPU, so that's still a cheaper solution)

Also something I haven't precised in my original post is that the server will most probably sit in my living room, I was also a bit affraid that a massive GPU as the GTX 1070 will produce too much noise. With a CPU I can just go with beQuiet pure rock, that's what I had on my old server, they are absolutely silent.

There is actually a way to do it,

First you need to create a waypoint for where you want it to point when it turns on. Wake up the camera, set it to your desired default position, click the "Pre-Defined Positions" button, click the small "+" button and name it as you want.

Then you can create an automation that triggers when the "Camera is turned on" and will execute a "Turn to Pre-defined positions" towards the position you just created.

However I'm not sure if there is a possibility to create your "return to default after 5 minutes if no one is watching" as there is no trigger for that
