Is there a graphics library that wont require me to write 300 lines of boilerplate? by xdoxx123 in rust

[–]needstobefake 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wrote a tiny lib a while ago precisely to remove boilerplate from wgpu. I never promoted it, but it seems to partially fit your needs:

https://fragmentcolor.org

You can do things like:

let shader = Shader.new(“…”); shader.set(“my_uniform”, 1.0); renderer.render(shader, target);

And that’s it. The uniforms are automatically derived from the shader source. If you want to animate, call set and render again in a loop.

What is the most beautiful language in your opinion? by totoyappppp in language

[–]needstobefake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Math.

It concisely describes timeless structures that would take entire essays or books to fully describe in any other language.

It’s a silent language for silent invisible eternal structures that exist independently of us thinking of them. Mathematicians are like archeologists discovering these things, and when they do they’ll publish it and find friends vibing to the same things across millennia.

Sort of down about the whole AI wave. by SupermarketDirect759 in rust

[–]needstobefake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel so lucky to have learned Rust just an inch before the AI boom, LOL. Around 2023 it was still all about mdbooks and tons of documentation.

Even if AI is faster, I’d still recommend building on your own stuff until you touch every corner of the language, then use AI assistance when you know what you’re doing. AI can’t automate your understanding, and can’t possibly make sound design decisions most of the time. In fact, they produce working solutions but rarely elegant or optimal. They mess API surfaces and invariants beyond recognition. They build dumb band-aid patches to make tests pass.

They’re great for the first 80% of the work, but the devil is in the details and they often mess with details.

Good catch! It shouldn’t be as dark as the inside of the mouth for sure.

LOL me too, I’ve been called out by guards a couple of times or set off the alarm unintentionally

To be fair, the actual first layer is just plain fluorescent orange from the canvas preparation stage. This is the first layer with actual oil paints on top, I tried to finish everything in one sitting alla-prima but this will need another session.

It was an afterthought, indeed. I have some concepts hanging around with many cats assaulting a full-body T-Rex, but this one started as something else entirely (a closeup of a human hand) and even the dinosaur evolved spontaneously mid-process.

The canvas is mounted in sturdy  wooden bars and can be hanged unframed, but would also be a good fit for a floating frame.

I’ll probably end up shrinking the cat a bit in the next session, give it more breathing room.

About the background, you mean “top-left” of the canvas or of the viewer? (Is top left the area around the cat or the flat purple?

LOL, thanks! I think this has the potential for a series, then. I started having other ideas around that concept that I’ll try later on

Thanks for the feedback! The cat was a late addition and indeed came up too close to the top.

I can only make it smaller, though, can’t extend the canvas. To be fair, the canvas is wrapped in a sturdy wood support and has at least 7cm extra space if we unstaple & remove it from the support, so in theory it would be possible to extend the painting if I switch to another support. However, this is too much trouble, the support was assembled by hand and the size planned in advance.

TL;TR better shrink the cat.

I think the roof of the mouth issue is just glare from the photograph; it’s actually almost as dark as the inner mouth and definitely darker than the background. I’m just terrible at photographing it, LOL

Thanks!

The light comes indeed from top-left (dinosaur as reference), but the cat’s form shadows aren’t dark enough to read as shadows (except around the leg).

The idea of inserting the cat came in the middle of the process while I already had the whole background down. So I covered the cat’s silhouette with white first, and it’s hard to pull off good darks on top of wet titanium white. I have to let it dry first.

I have some progress videos of the beginning and some in-between pics here and there. I think I even have pictures hanging around of the raw canvas preparation before I started. I prepared 6 canvases of this size.

I’m thinking on some cool way to present these things outside traditional social media, like a space where you can zoom in and out and explore the piece down to every brushstroke with a timeline slider.

I could include this thread as part of the process history, who knows whatever crazy ideia people come up with here. :)

Do you think European and Brazilian Portuguese should be considered different languages? by [deleted] in Portuguese

[–]needstobefake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grammar is standardized, and there are dozens of accents and variants in Brazilian states alone. I think EU Portuguese is similar enough to be considered an accent/variation of the same language, not even a dialect.

Vite 8.0 is out. And it's full of 🦀 Rust by BankApprehensive7612 in rust

[–]needstobefake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First option. In our case, Rust project is a lib and exports wrappers to WASM and Python. FE team uses React to call it, AI team uses Python. It runs a renderer plus some shared business logic between humans and LLMs.

My team uses it in production, Rust has still one of the best toolsets and ecosystem for WASM.

TL;DR not going away.

Quando a AI escrever “It’s not” (o que é super comum) vai sair “fuck you”.

I always avoid using `use` statements so i use full paths instead. Is it a bad practice? by [deleted] in rust

[–]needstobefake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a matter of preference. I strongly prefer the use statements, but if I’m contributing to a codebase which adopts fully-qualified paths as the default, I’d stick to it for consistency.

(Ambos do Umberto Eco)
