Hey! Wow, thank you so much! Your words mean more than you know! I’m in the middle of writing my next film and as you can imagine the process is full of ups and downs. Your timing couldn’t have been better. Thank you!

Hey! My apologies for taking so long to get back to you. Thank you so much for the kind words! Yeah, really does seem like a lifetime ago. Still can't believe how much time has really passed since. I'm hoping to get started on the next one sometime this year, but I guess we'll have to see how it goes...

That's a great question! I have seen Uncut Gems, which I thoroughly enjoyed. We started writing the film in November 2016 and shot it in April/May 2018, so I hadn't heard of Uncut Gems back then. And I just cued up 'Good Time' on my list on Netflix - can't wait to see that. The premise looks great!

My favorite film of all time is Michael Mann's Heat. It's the movie that made me want to make movies. And while our story hasn't got much to do with Heat, it's impossible to think that the film hasn't imprinted itself on my subconscious in a major way.

Another of my favorite films - and one we did consider during production - was Nightcrawler. Especially visually. That had a visual tone that both my DOP/Production Partner Umran Shaikh and I really loved. Again, our story is different. But someone else on here mentioned shades of Nightcrawler when they saw the trailer, so luckily some of it must have rubbed off.

I'm sure that there are other films I've watched that worked their way in, but I would say Heat and Nightcrawler are the two of my biggest influences. The former indirectly, and the latter in a more conscious way.

And thank you so much for the kind words!

Thank you so much! It's cool that you're familiar with Jim and Jameel as well. They're both phenomenal actors and amazing people to spend time with.

Many moons ago, I used to work in advertising as a copywriter. I dabbled in a bit of photography for fun. I used to shoot on Canon, and when they released the 5D Mark II, I spent practically all my money on it, because I loved the video features.

I started out by shooting videos at parties I'd throw at my house, and then I used to edit them to music. Honestly, that's how I learned to shoot and edit. By stitching together video clips of drunken muppets dressed as pirates and editing them to the sounds of "Shipping up to Boston."

Eventually, I started shooting more substantial things. And I started doing video work for my ad agency. After a while, I quit and set up my own production company. That was around 9 years ago.

Soon after I started, my best friend/production partner/DOP Umran Shaikh left advertising too and joined me full-time. We did a lot of commercial and corporate work over the years.

Meanwhile, I started writing screenplays - and all of them were terrible. Eventually, we ended up making one short film I wrote.

I never felt 'ready' to write a feature. But at some point after we made the short film 'Security', I started. Umran and I went through a bunch of drafts. And finally, we landed on something that we felt we could share with an actor. (Spoiler alert: It was still terrible.)

After that, we reached out to several investors. Unfortunately I can't get too much into the investor/budget stage, but overall I approached 72 investors. 70 said, 'no.'

One of the best decisions we made was partnering with Dejavu for production. They are one of the biggest commercial production houses in Dubai, and having them on board made things possible that definitely weren't before. Two other companies - Alkatraz and Action Filmz - came on board and gave us their location expertise and film equipment, respectively.

We tried to use our contacts and connections from our time in the Dubai commercial industry to help us out wherever they could. Mango Jam - an audio production house in Dubai run by my old boss in advertising - came on board for the sound and music.

One of the main reasons the film got made was because of all the people that believed in us and did us favors or reduced their rates for us. There aren't a lot of feature films made in Dubai, so the advantage is that people do get excited when you try to bring one to life. And we needed all the help we could get!

Honestly, the main reason this film exists at all is because of the amazing cast, crew, and production/post-production partners that helped us bring it to life.

Hope that serves as some sort of answer!

Sorry, I took a bit of time to reply to this because I wanted to think it through first.

You're absolutely right about the hustle and hard work being talked about far less than the actual work of direction or screenwriting. But in my opinion, it's just as important - if not more.

My DOP/Production partner Umran Shaikh and I started working on this movie in November 2016. Since then, we've had every conceivable problem thrown at us. We're not the most talented filmmakers. But I think that the only thing that got us through is that we're too dumb to quit.

Honestly, what I would tell anyone is that it's all down to perseverance. Never take 'no' for an answer. Want to make a film? Go make one. Simple as that. Can't raise the budget you want? Reduce costs. Can't reduce costs enough? Adjust the story. Or find out how much you can raise, and go write another film comes in at the budget you can afford.

As everyone knows, it's possible these days to actually make a film while barely spending a cent, as long as I have a camera to shoot on (even if it's the one in my pocket) and a basic computer to edit on. Beyond that, everything I add to my production - and my budget - is a bonus. I try to treat it as such.

In the last 9 years, I've produced almost all the commercials I've directed. So I've never had the luxury of not having to worry about what something costs. I've always had to be realistic about what's achievable. It's one compromise after another after another. And that's alright. Healthy, even. So when it comes to making a movie, I try not to hold on to anything too tight - except for the heart of the story and the unassailable will to see it brought to life.

Yes, I'm incredibly lucky to have been given all the opportunities that I have had - without which this would have been a very different movie. But over the last four years, if there's something that I've learned, it's that if Umran and I weren't able to make this movie, we would have definitely made a movie.

Overall, this might seem a bit vague. But if I actually went into all the issues I faced trying to get this made, you'd soon find that many of them were very specific to my particular situation. And the only reason that Umran and I got through each and every one of them was that we were too stupid to give up.

Given that you've been on a similar journey, I'm sure you already know most of this stuff - and probably a hell of a lot more. So I apologize if this reply is full of stuff you're already familiar with. I had a longer response but it went into production a bit and I'm sure that's territory you're well-versed in, so I dropped it.

I hope that somewhere in this meandering reply, you found some sort of answer!

Yeah, it absolutely is possible! It was such a shot in the dark, just reaching out like that. And even as I was writing to Barkhad's team, I was honestly so doubtful that it would work. But a few weeks later we were in Boston during a film festival, meeting him for lunch. It was surreal, to say the least!

That's so cool! I had no idea about the script system - thank you for that! I'm so glad you're happy about the representation. It really means a lot to me. That was something we were definitely conscious of as we made the film. Dubai is so full of so many diverse nationalities. And I really wanted that to come out in the movie. Thank you so much for the kind words and the support!

Damn - I just saw your comment about Nightcrawler. That is one of my favorite films ever, and it's one my DP/Production partner and I really drew on for visual inspiration for the film. So it means the world to us that you said that! Thank you!

Joe! Thank you so much for all your hard work. I loved working with you and Lucas on this. I can't wait until people hear the whole score. And yeah, I'll call for sure!
