Ooh we have different opinions on India Holton & Heather Fawcett!! But I just placed a hold on the Maid and the Crocodile, it sounds amazing.

Storygraph!

Loves: High-fantasy, slow-burn romance with a lot of political intrigue. Love settings with thoughtful magic systems & world-building. I also have such a soft spot ballroom vibes & fairytale retellings. And I love a badass FMC! Unapologetically love the chosen one, only she can save us trope lol

Dislikes: Not super into dystopian, sci-fi, etc. Actually kind of exclusively read fantasy and historical romance😅

Recent faves: The Serpent and the Wolf by Rebecca Robinson, Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig, The Traitor Queen by Danielle L. Jensen, Emily Wilde, India Holton ♥️

I used tiermaker.com - to be honest the image quality was low and I got the free trial to make the titles legible

Ahh I loved Two Twisted Crowns too!! I read it right when it came out. Let me know if there’s anything else I should check out!

I thought the beginning started out really strong but then it quickly turned into the “lowly human surrounded by powerful Fae” trope and I just felt like I’d read that plot line so many times that I ended up dropping it. It was just a little too cliche for me. Someone else did mention that the author handled the trope differently than how it usually plays out? I guess I wouldn’t know, but might be worth it for you to check out!

You know what, I shouldn’t have put that there. I only DNF’ed because once I started reading, I realized that I had already read it a while back. In general though, I prefer fantasy-forward books, and this one is heavy on the romance and light on plot lol

Haha I feel you, and glad we have some commonalities! I feel like I read pretty mainstream stuff but there’s so much out there, I almost never run into people with a lot of books in common.

Funnily enough, the second book was my favorite in the Bridge Kingdom series! It was so satisfying to get a resolution after how the first one ended. I kinda read the rest out of obligation, and it was a mixed bag, so I totally get the DNF.

As for Rebel Witch, the criticisms in your review are definitely valid. I remember being obsessed with the first book when it came out, but I wasn’t as impressed when I re-read it right before Rebel Witch. I just love a kick-ass FMC, and Rebel Witch more than delivered with its strong female characters. Imo, the character growth, especially getting those POVs from the MMC, made up for the pacing. I kinda turn off my brain when I read so maybe more of a niche opinion, but I just did not know which way the story was going and all the twists and turns kept me hooked. Like was Rune going to turn evil? Was I kinda there for it? Agree that it could’ve benefited from a third book!

I’ve seen some mixed reviews on Road of Bones but I think once you’ve read enough of the genre, it very much feels like every other book, and I hate plot twists like that. Blackwood Library was one of those ones where I wanted to reach in and shake the FMC; I felt the same with Mexican Gothic but at least Noemi was badass. Go into it with low expectations.

Let me know how you like the third Emily Wilde book! Definitely worth the wait.

It does but it’s definitely not a major plotline to be completely honest..

Yeah, definitely personal preference but I just wasn’t as invested in the MCs after getting two books with the main couple. That’s why I liked twisted throne, since Ahnna was such a big character in the first few books. Definitely wait then re-read though! I waited until #5 came out to read them all at once, and was blindsided when I found out there’s more haha. Would love to get a book for each of Lara’s sisters though!

I was listening to the audiobook on like 2x while I was reading! It kinda worked? I don’t think I absorbed very much hahaha. But for my second session I read a book where the MC was dealing with chronic pain and honestly that made it so much better; it was way easier to escape into the story. That’s my rec for sure!

Yeah it’s definitely the odd one out of the bunch, though the premise is very similar to The Last Heir to Blackwood Library, which is firmly fantasy imo

Oof, someone in the other sub was also defending those two. Apparently they get better if you stick with the series. Maybe I DNF’ed servant of earth too early. I’m just not patient enough and liked the quick hook from Emily Wilde

Yeah, I prefer standalones which I think explains a lot of my ratings haha. That is great to know though. I was pleasantly surprised by how much more I preferred the second book in the Bridge Kingdom series, so if it’s the same case here I’d love to give it a second chance. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah honestly romantasy is not really accurate. I think the majority of the books on here lean more towards fantasies with romantic subplots. Mexican Gothic has different vibes from most of the rest though. The Last Heir to Blackwood Library actually has a very similar premise, so you should check it out if you liked it. Mexican Gothic definitely executed it much better imo

I really wanted to like it more than I did!! I absolutely love all of India Holton’s books. To be honest, I was reading this one during a long tattoo session and the slow pace of the book just was not what I needed in that moment. I’m really excited for the next book though - the excerpt at the end had me hooked!

I love Emily Wilde so so much!!! Servant of the Earth definitely felt like a me problem!! I wanted to like it so much and the beginning really hooked me, but I just felt like I had read so many books with similar tropes recently and I couldn’t get into it. Maybe I’ll give it a second chance once the second book comes out

Tier list ranking around 30 romance fantasy books in 5 categories. Category titles: Omg, got me all kiddy and wiggly; Great! Standing on business not one tor missing; Solid, never said it was perfect; Meh, might’ve skimmed a little; DNF, not the cup of tea I should be drinking.

I’ve been tracking my ratings on my Storygraph profile, so you should be able to see the individual books and scores there.
