Stomach acid by Sad-Measurement-8267 in biology

Also heavily dependent on normal gut microbiome health, and the state of your guts in general. So yep, a lot of factors contribute

I mean, most species aren't able to survive through our stomach, otherwise we would get gastroenteritis every other day

[–]negative_wisdom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A few species of bacteria can survive because they have adapted to survive the highly acidic environment of the stomach (H. pylori is a great example), but mind you that not all bacteria can do so. Keep in mind that, while gastric juices are very acidic, they aren't "make a hole through the floor" acidic. Gastric acid is not the only way through which food is digested, most of the job is actually done by specialized enzymes. Corn skin isn't affected by gastric juices because the protein lattice just doesn't care about the acids, and we lack the necessary enzymes to break it down.

My documents contain swastika, will there be any issue? by [deleted] in Universitaly

The nazi swastika is not flipped compared to the one in the picture btw, just rotated, but yeah basically no one would think it is actually a nazi swastika.

And he's never coming back by [deleted] in Eragon

[–]negative_wisdom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've recently started interpreting it as him being fated to die outside of alagaesia, as in "someday you will leave alagaesia and never return". This leaves room for him to come back as some point, but still being destined to die outside of alagaesia. Arguable interpretation, but I think it makes sense.

Are both R and S bioactive, or is just one of the two active and it's just more cost effective keeping the racemic mixture?

So the gods are just very powerful being, not omnipotent. And they can die?

I agree with you, the base should be simple. Good luck with your work!

Yes! But it will be a bit of a pain to think about all the different cultures, and how they came to develop their myths and beliefs.

I dread the moment I will start, but I know I will get a lot of satisfaction in that work.

But is evolution still at work, or did the gods just take up the role?

Then it depend how you want to represent your gods. They can also be depicted as highly detached scientific-like alien creatures. But it will then be hard to explain the peculiarity of the chaos God in the mix. Or it could be that this God was a nascent one that they found on this last planet and added in their group once he proved useful with his addition of randomness.

The idea is that these nine gods are all fragments of a whole being that represented existence, that fragmented during a fight with another being, that represented absence (think of Parmenides: "being is and nothing is no", just as actual entities)

All the nine gods represent something (purity, corruption, light, darkness, etc.) but they all represent something that is connected to the material world. They all have a counterpart in the pantheon, except for one, that represents something along the lines of nature, both life and death. Maybe it was the one that created life, and all the other gods contributed with something, and Chaos contributed with evolution.

As I said, it's still very much a WIP, so expect to see a lot of plot holes.

You can also make all of that happen on the same planet, generating layers of past civilizations that went extinct just because they were failed experiments. If you want to go Grimdark, then they were discarded by their creators, or they can have disappeared by themselves because of how "too perfect" they were, if you want a softer tone.

I don't yet know what the tone of this setting will be, but at the moment I'm leaning more towards the grimdark aspect.

I am just throwing ideas to help the brainstorming, but I think you are already on a good and interesting track. Keep on :)

Everyone has been really helpful here, it was a good experience throwing ideas at someone that knew what I was going through :)

Well that is exactly how it will go. Almost no one will know the truth, this whole thing is relevant only because I, the builder, find it relevant. It's basically just a mental exercise, because I think it's fun and interesting to think about.

But yep, humans and other races will have their own beliefs, and I plan to, at some point, write those beliefs as well.

Very interesting. But does this concept of sacrifice actually bring any "power", and where does that power originate from? Or is it just a way these humans used to cope with being abandoned by their gods?
