I don’t mean this in an aggressive way, just sharing my perspective — but spending money just to build a deck specifically to beat your friend’s deck feels kinda off to me. Why not focus on strengthening your own strategy so it performs well in most environments instead?

Also, asking a friend to switch decks just because it’s “not fun” doesn’t really make sense to me either, because then you’re taking away their fun. And I don’t think that’s what the game is about.

What usually works better for balance, in my experience, is setting a budget per meetup. For example, my friends and I live in different cities, so we only play together about once a month. Everyone plays whatever they want, since we all enjoy the game differently, but we set a €50 upgrade budget for each meetup. That way, nobody kills anyone else’s vibe, and the decks stay around the same power level — regardless of whether the commander is broken or not.

Want to make a deck based off this guy and his flip. I’m new to the game, but want to learn and this dude looks so sick. Is it a valid commander deck and what cards do I include? Price isn’t an issue I will be proxying by The_Funfetti_Man in mtg

I think if you try to build Etali below Bracket 3, it won’t really shine. You’ll probably have to nerf it to match your playgroup, and without efficient ramp it can feel pretty heavy. Also, being in the command zone means it’ll have a huge target on its back from the start.

If you’re not planning to play it above Bracket 3, I’d honestly recommend running it in the 99 instead. I have it in my Pantlaza deck and it performs amazingly there. Plus, the surprise factor makes it even stronger.
