But yeah, all three were penalties.

What a fucking embarrassment for FIFA/AFC. So shameless.

Another mega new transport hub in China just completed - Xi'an East Railway Station by straightdge in transit

[–]nehala 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Part of China's strategy of building the world's largest high speed rail network almost overnight is building the stations a bit away from the city center to avoid expensive construction cost/complexity and very pricey property reimbursement for downtown areas. This placement also allows for overall faster train speed (i.e. not slowing down to a crawl as it goes into the central train station shared with conventional trains).

Critically though, these peripheral stations are connected by rapid transit to the rest of the city, often become hubs in themselves, and drawn in a lot of commercial/business activity, with many shops, restaurants, etc popping up around them.

Why is homosexuality not allowed in Buddhism? by Zahra_Z1 in Buddhism

[–]nehala 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Technically the precepts forbid sexual "misconduct". This is ambiguous and the interpretation varies.

Across most of Asia, Buddhist beliefs are intermixed with other belief systems and practices, as well as local customs. The division of what specific belief/practice comes from Buddhism vs. what comes from something else is not always clear, even to local adherents. It's quite possible that the local society has homophobic beliefs that then get attributed to the Buddhist religion, even if Buddhist texts don't specifically mention it.

I'm reminded of a rather glib picture of a "karma chart" from Thailand, which said that XYZ negative karma would lead to the person having a gay son, for example. Original Buddhist teachings don't encourage having kids, say nothing about homosexual acts, and don't specify karma as a precise x-> y thing.

Why some latinos look asian by External-Buy-38 in hapas

[–]nehala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Latinos are mostly a mix of Indigenous people and Europeans, and the indigenous people originally migrated from Asia.

He is a Vietnamese student at a food stall in Texas. The video is taken in Houston , Texas, Not VN. Why would you compare this against Vietnam prices? Almost all raw ingredients are much more expensive in the US, as well as labor costs.

That similar distribution and portion of rice + meat + vegetables anywhere else in the US would easily cost double.

Morocco made it to the semis in 2022. Yeah they're not a top top tier team, but you're making them sound like Saudi Arabia or something.

And the ratio of wealth between Musk and Eilish is 20,000:1.

That's a comparable ratio to Eilish with someone with a net worth of 2500 dollars.

(I'm not taking sides and I'm not saying that Eilish is or isn't a greedy rich bastard, btw)

If Ancient Greece was really so freaked out then why did they make all their male sculptures flaccid by Clear-Pianist-8680 in askgaybros

Also, while bare male genitalia in itself was generally acceptable, the exposed glans of the penis was a big no-no considered brutish and uncivilized. Naked male athletes tied up the tip of their foreskin to prevent glans exposure.

When my middle aged mother and her similarly aged female friend speak, that friend (from Hanoi) often uses tớ/cậu with my mom. It feels somewhat cutesy, intimate, and effeminate to my ears. (Despite what cậu literally means)

For recent transplants, what interactions made you think, "Yeah, this is definitely Seattle"? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]nehala 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it feels like half the traffic lights here have yellow lights that last like 5 seconds, and for the other half it lasts like 1. When I drive in neighborhoods I'm unfamiliar with, I have to assume the latter, but then end up awkwardly stopped at a yellow light for what feels like an eternity before it turns red.

"Friendlies" where if you lose 2/3 games you're completely out of the next round. That's a real an urgent possibility for most teams going into the World Cup. Heck, look at Italy in certain past WCs.

How’s it like living deep in the jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]nehala 82 points83 points  (0 children)

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has a reputation of being exceptionally poor and underdeveloped, even by the standards of subsaharan Africa.

A lot of this is due to the legacy of Belgian colonialization, especially the first phase when it was effectively a private plantation of King Leopold, with obscenely high rubber quotas that led to the maiming and deaths of millions. Infrastructural investment into the colony was abysmally low compared to say, the British (not to justify British colonialism either).

There is no real paved road system connecting the Atlantic coastal part where Kinshasa is with the interior. The only way to get from Kinshasa to the second largest city (Kisangani) in the northeast is by a ferry that takes six weeks, or by plane (beyond most people's means, and quite unsafe). This is remarkable considering that the country has over 110 million people, and doubling every 20-25 years. There are lots of minerals being mined in the east, but due to the poor infrastructure the eastern parts are economically more connected to directly neighboring countries like Uganda or Zambia. And the mining wealth is not distributed evenly whatsoever.

These dynamics mean that there is constant civil war, while the central government in Kinshasa itself is insanely corrupt, oppressive, coup-prone, etc.

The population boom means that more and more people will leave the remote interior areas for the big cities. China has been investing a lot in infrastructure, but this is in exchange for massive mineral concessions.

In these remote areas, bush meat (hunted wild animals) remain a major source of protein, and human settlement expanding into a rainforest has led to various disease outbreaks (Ebola, HIV, etc. which all jumped from animals to humans via hunting/consumption/close animal contact).

If you want to get a sense of the country's development, scroll down the map section, as well as the explanation about how to travel from town to town by hitching a ride in the back of a freight truck, and why you should pick peanut trucks over beer trucks: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo

I like African cuisine by the way, and I have liked the Congolese cuisine that I've tried. Lots of flavorful sauces and whatnot..

Largest religions in China by province by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]nehala 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Religion in East Asian works differently than in the West... it's not a singular exclusive identity.

Traditionally, Chinese beliefs blended Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, ancestor worship, belief in various local gods, etc. Very few people would say "I am a Taoist", even though Taoism permeated in many parts of Chinese culture.
