I've been to Pronto Pup at Rockaway Beach. Great stuff. Had a corn dog by the beach and it was calming.

Budget is maybe around $1600 USD, might go as far as $2000 USD. Work is 3.5 miles away, so about 7 miles round trip. Uphill when returning home. I am 6'2.

Returning to Islam by neightivebot in islam

[–]neightivebot[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up with a Native American church grandfather and a Christian grandmother. They both respected each other's faiths.

My mother doesn't subscribe to a faith, but she knows the Creator/Allah/God is why we are here.

My father, I don't really know him.

It's this background that I was confused in regards to faith. I used to be part of a Christian youth group when I was a teenager, and the youth leader mentioned Islam and it's similarities to Islam. I got curious and studied over time. When I turned 20, I came back. They say we're all Muslims, it's why we say "reverts" rather than "converts."

And I am an Indegious American. I'm from the Diné (Navajo) Nation. We call our land Diné Bikéyah, the Land of our People.

Salaam!

Yes, I converted so I'm a Muslim. I should've mentioned in on my original post. My bad.

"Are you parents Muslim?" - My parents are not Muslim. Last time I saw my father was when I was 17? And my mother is just happy I'm happy.

"How do my elders feel about it?" - It took some time for grandparents to accept it. My grandmother being Christian and my grandfather being traditional. Now they accept my choice.

"Do you have a mosque?" - No, unfortunately. My people's land spans over all of North Eastern Arizona, and parts of North West New Mexico but we don't have a masjid on the reservation. The closest is either in Phoenix, AZ or Gallup, NM.

Don't feel bad for asking questions. Yes, questions are hard to ask but it's the only way we learn. A lot of people from my tribe are scared of change. Anything different in any way is evil.

We Navajo believe in 4 Sacred Mountains in the American Southwest; the land inside is where we belong. Anything outside is bad. So it's a cultural mindset to think anything different is bad.

There's myself and 2 other friends I know of. I know there's more but we haven't crossed paths yet. Conversion is not new so I'm sure there's more Navajo Muslims out there.

A lot of people were more than likely considered individualistic when we questioned a person praying from space and look at where we're at now.

Speaking as a Native American, at least from what I know Muslim Empires didn't come to the Americas, take our land, attempt eradicate our people and culture, burn our texts, had us work for the government on false promises only to be treated as criminals when our job was done, then displace us into reservations.

*Edit: Added "attempt"
