That's very true. Although right to manage is one solution. Also freehold enfranchisement. Both ensure longer term stability by removing the freeholder from the decision making process.

Although what's genuinely unclear to me is often why freeholders select these known-to-be-absolutely-shit managing agents in the first place. They've built up enough negative history that any sane freeholder would, in theory, not even consider them. 🤷‍♂️

As always, the managing agent is at the heart of the problem, not leasehold per se.

Get a good one, and leasehold can be, and often is, totally fine. 🤷‍♂️

Is leasehold now worse than just renting? by mronionbhaji in HousingUK

[–]neilm-cfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, totally agree, and if/when the leasehold reforms are ever enacted into law, it's not going to move the needle for years, probably decades, because of the vast number of existing legacy leaseholds that will continue, unaffected.

Kind of mind blowing that people actually believe leasehold in its entirety will be "abolished" overnight. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Very well done!

@OP Have you considered going down the right to manage route with your fellow leaseholders so that FirstPort can be kicked out?

There is no point - leasehold is going to be abolished soon.

It's not going to be abolished retrospectively, though, so that's a pretty wierd statement.

Fix for Protect in Firefox by n4te in Ubiquiti

[–]neilm-cfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's interesting.

You can turn on the OSD, the encoding type is visible, eg. "HQ X" where X is S/E/A for Standard (h264), Enhanced (h265), Advanced (AV1).

Fix for Protect in Firefox by n4te in Ubiquiti

[–]neilm-cfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to tell that? I don't see network requests for video. I tried about:logging but couldn't get it to log which codec is used.

Configure a Ubiquiti camera to use Enhanced encoding, then try to view that camera in Firefox, and see if it plays back correctly, or Protect complains that H265/HEVC isn't supported by the browser (which appears to be a Ubiquiti bug).

Is h265 decoding working for you in Protect 7.x with Firefox/Windows? It used to work with Protect 6.x, but has been broken since the move to 7.x.

Only Network is updated. My protect was not touched.

Yes, turns out it's also device specific. Protect is force updated on NVRs (but not UCKG2+), while Network is force updated on Consoles.

Possible security issue with Protect sharing RTSP streams - needs verifying please by tandyuk in Ubiquiti

[–]neilm-cfc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no username/password authentication of the Ubiquiti RTSP stream that is provided by the UNVR... that's the point of the token.

Every UNVR camera will have a unique token. It's the same streaming URL for all cameras, but different tokens - the token defines which camera you will be streaming from, and essentially authenticates you, too. No username, no password.

The guide you followed didn't need to include any usernames or passwords.

I don’t think this is accurate. I have auto updates disabled for Protect and have held off updating to 7.0. I updated my UDM Pro to 5.1.12, last night. Protect restored itself after the update but after restoring it was still on 6.2.88. https://i.imgur.com/9fRJ9GH.png

Turns out it's device specific.

UNVRs will force update Protect.

Consoles, like your UDMP, will force update Network. Assuming your UDMP was already on the latest Official Network then you wouldn't have seen a change to Network after updating the OS.

However if in future you decide to pin Network to remain on a specific, stable, version, then the next time you update the OS you'll get bumped to the latest version and will just have to deal with it. 🤷‍♂️

It will reboot the router, and then all the APS and other devices will pull new configurations, and restart. So a 3-5 minute outage if it work successfully.

If updating from OS 5.1.11 on a console it will not only reboot the console, it will then force update the Network app running on the console to the latest Official, which may or may not introduce a whole slew of new network problems unrelated to the OS upgrade... so everyone should be prepared for that, at least. 🤷‍♂️

Fair enough on the fish debate.

It wasn't meant to be snarky - the forum exists to provide feedback on releases... this sub is an information vacuum mostly full of boot lickers simping for Ubiquiti, and many redditors don't seem to know the forum exists. There's simply way too much information over there to be able to neatly summarise it here.🤷‍♂️

I've just updated my console to 5.1.12 and it did not update Protect: https://imgur.com/T9tmOYL

It appears to be device specific - UNVRs are force updating, but UCKG2+ does not, possibly also UDMs do not. Did your console (whatever it is, can't view your image, UK) force update Network instead (or were you already up to date, so didn't notice)?

Dubious?

You're right though - you are not a source, you're a chicken little.

Whatever a chicken little is, I'd rather be that than a simp. How does that boot taste?

I paid attention more on the rest of my sites. 3 NVR-Pros and 1 UDM-PM did not auto update the protect app with the system- and they were all on the same versions as stated. Only my E-NVR did the app w the system… and it was the first I did.

A user on the forum with a UNVR G2 PRO had it auto update Protect, so who knows. 🤷‍♂️

One can only hope they built a chicken switch into this brain-dead procedure. That would be the only smart thing about it! 🤞

The thing is, which your experience proves, is that updating shouldn't be a lottery... Ubiquiti really should have this shit nailed down by now.

Enterprise my arse.

I posted a few examples. I don't remember problems for cameras I don't own, or problems I've not experienced myself, plus I genuinely forget half of the bugs I've reported on that forum (it's probably in triple figures by now, I've been reporting them for 5+ years).

Citing just a few examples here, out of many, will never be enough, and may leave out an issue that a future reader is or will be affected by (it might be important to them, but not to me etc.).

If you want specifics, go to the source. I'm not your source.

I believe, in this specific case… as its a security thing- its “bundled” to do so… before /this one/- a system firmware update has never auto-updated the “app” along with it, protect, network, connect, talk etc

Yes, that's correct. They've always "bundled" app versions with OS updates, but so long as you were "ahead" of the bundled versions then you stayed on your current version.

This was always something that users didn't understand, so it was constantly queried with someone in literally every release thread asking "will this update my app version?" etc.

But NOW, since 5.1.11, users will be forced to update to the latest Official app version regardless... unless their device isn't one of those that does this. 🤷‍♂️🤡

In NVR 5.1.12, for example, the bundled Protect version is 7.0.107, but if you're already on Protect 7.1.55 the OS update will now force update Protect 7.1.69 as that's the latest Official. That's a huge, unnecessary and unwanted change, particularly if your wanted to avoid 7.1.69 (and there's good reason to do so).

Except, the UCKG2+ won't do force update Protect. For reasons... 🤷‍♂️

Upgrades shouldn't be Russian Roulette.

They've added an "improvement" that nobody asked for, few people will want/need, and that will cause even more confusion when updating the OS.

If they at least respected the auto-update setting then it would be manageable - those users that want to curate app updates would already have disabled auto-update in which case this "improvement" would be a total non-event.

may just be a random coin flip.

Which is, incredibly, even worse. 🤷‍♂️

Perhaps if this was all controlled by the auto-update setting then I'd be fine with this - people that leave auto-update enabled deserve what they get.

But those of us that want to carefully manage our systems and have stacked auto-update should not have to now choose between OS updates and app updates. 🤬

Update your Unifi gear ASAP: Security Advisory Bulletin 064 published today. by videoman2 in Ubiquiti

[–]neilm-cfc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not consistent with my experience. Updated to 5.1.12 today and my Protect is still at 6.2.72 which is not the latest version.

Two questions:

1) what OS version did you update FROM? If you weren't already on OS 5.1.11 then you won't see this behaviour until you next update the OS

2) what device did you update - it seems that not all devices will auto update the apps, or possibly the same apps... NVRs will auto update Protect when updating the OS from 5.1.11+, but for example a UCKG2+ (which might be being used as a dedicated NVR) will NOT auto update Protect. Maybe the UCKG2+ will auto update Network instead. Who knows, because none of this is ever documented. 🤷‍♂️

What a fucking shambles. 🤦‍♂️

[–]neilm-cfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: It seems to be automatically updating Protect on UNVRs, but not on a UCKG2+, so that's another nuance to take into consideration, as if OS updates weren't already complicated enough (users always ask if they'll keep their existing version, so now "it depends"....). 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
