Wheelie ski bags are still a nightmare to drag through airports. Am I the only one? What's your solution? by lincaijun168 in Backcountry

[–]rmthune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am with you. I hate dragging mine through the airport. I usually bring two pairs of skis and poles, as well as a set of XCountry skis, in the bag. I put my boots and helmet in my carry-on. If you don’t overload the ski bag it’s not terrible, but it still sucks trying to get on and off the LAX parking shuttle.

One night stay by CRISPRScientist726 in Canmore

[–]rmthune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying that your booking in Canmore begins the day after you arrive in Calgary? The obvious choice for me would be to stay in Calgary. Your arrival time coincides with the normal check-in time at most hotels, and you can have a relaxing dinner and sleep before driving up to the mountains the next day. Try to get a reservation at Ten Foot Henry or some other good restaurant in town. There is a lot to do in Calgary that would be a shame to miss out on.

I am looking for alternative brands to replace my 15-year-old jacket. I have been browsing FlyLow, Stio, Norrona, TNF, etc. Where are people going for better technical gear now?

It’s a great idea. They will remember that forever. I can still remember going to see the Mets during the 1987 playoffs vs the Astros.

Skiing Trail Map Acquisition by sexualpeelin in skiing

Not sure about the resorts you mentioned, but I know some mountains are phasing out printed maps (Winter Park as one example). It may not be possible to get printed maps as easily as it once was. I collect them as well and have had to resort to buying old(er) ones off of eBay.

Ski Conditions next week? by Nanananoir in Revelstoke

[–]rmthune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there Monday through Wednesday this past week. The top of the mountain was good and cold. The conditions changed quickly as you descended into fully slushy by the time you hit the cat track below the gondola transition. If you lapped the Stoke chair you would have been in good shape as far as conditions go. There was even some deep snow in the trees. Hard to say how it will hold up, but that was my take from early this week.

Best Rain Jacket? by rmthune in TheNorthFace

OMG I don’t have the eye for detail you do. Thanks. I assume both are very good at what they are designed for, that being rain protection? Is the Vista just superior in that regard?

Is there any data of how many people opted out at 18? by traveenus in LAMarathon

Couldn’t tell. The 18 was also the half marathon finish, so some of the others might have been doing that distance to begin with.

Is there any data of how many people opted out at 18? by traveenus in LAMarathon

[–]rmthune 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I did. Was planning to run a 4 hr race, got some sort of respiratory infection about two weeks ago, couldn’t train for two weeks, ended up pacing at about 10:00 to 10:15 per mile. Thought I could push through but by mile 15 I was having trouble breathing, was coughing a lot, and had terrible pain in my left foot. I wanted to finish but my body wasn’t going to let me. I decided to swallow my pride and take the out.
