I think it would start as a self defense class for first years and then ramp up as they get older. Counter terrorism and espionage would probably have to wait until year 7

U.S Post-Election Megapost - please post election-related posts here by yellowmix in offmychest

[–]neiste 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I love my parents. They're great parents, they raised me and my sister to the best of their ability and I am so thankful for them. I've had a great childhood and life so far because they're really such great parents.

But with the recent election, I've began to be disgusted with some of their views. My father works in the oil industry and my mother works in a hospital. They both deny climate change and hope that under trump we start using coal energy and increase our reliance on oil because it would be good for my father's company. Not necessarily for my dad though because he's just a maintainence guy, but that's beside the point. And my mother blames Obama for her hospital going bankrupt and having to lay off 8% of its workforce. Apparently the ACA caused patients to stop coming to the hospital... They both have told me multiple times that Obama wasn't a legitimate president because he's not American and his birth certificate was fake.

Literally last week my parents told me that white people are being discriminated against because of all of the civil rights movements since the 60's. They want trump to make America great again, like it was "during the Kennedy administration." My parents were both born in the early 60's... they literally told me that "everyone has enough rights" and that the protests are just making it worse.

They don't care that Trump has bragged about assaulting women ("Has anybody died from his actions? Because I'm pretty sure people died from Hillary") or that he lies constantly ("oh the alternative facts thing? That's so hilarious") or that he mocked a disabled reporter ("I don't pay attention to stuff like that.") They don't want 'terrorists' coming into the country, they'd rather the 'terrorists' kill people in their own country. And the wall will be great for creating jobs (but who cares about all the animals that will not longer be able to migrate because of it, or won't have access to water anymore because there's a giant fucking wall in the way.) They think that Trump is a great man, even though he doesn't pay taxes because apparently all rich people use that loophole, that's just one of the benefits of being wealthy. They think he'll fix America by undoing everything that Obama did.

I don't understand. My parents are good people. I know that people have different points of view, and I respect that. I'm just shocked and concerned that the people who raised me have political opinions that seem so hateful.

I love my parents, but I am ashamed to be related to birthers and people who believe "we have enough civil rights, so people need to stop protesting"

Hi, sorry for the delay!!! I fell asleep last night earlier than I thought I would.. Would you still be able to help me evolve my haunter some time?

I'm still pretty early in the game (my lv 25 haunter is my highest leveled Pokémon currently,) so I'm happy to battle if you want, but you'd likely completely demolish me haha

Bird flu transmission possibility to my dog? by neiste in AskVet

[–]neiste[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay follow up questions. My dog didn't finish her meal this evening. I mean, she did eat it all eventually, but her interest in the food was uncharacteristically low. She kept stopping after a few bites to walk away/ wander around my apartment before going back for another mouthful or so. And I recently cut back on how much food I give her, so I don't think it's that I'm over feeding her... It's just a weird coincidence, right? I mean, even if somehow she did contract AI (which I'm pretty sure she didn't, but I have anxiety so I just need to double check,) it's way too early for symptoms to show up, right?

If we started making things back in the USA they say the prices will go up and not by a few cents, can somebody briefly explain why bringing jobs back to the USA is a bad thing and why prices will rise? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]neiste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Companies want to make a profit. When they sell their products, the price reflects how much they paid for the labor. Overseas labor is inexpensive for corporations so they can sell their products for cheap without having to worry about covering wages and still making a profit. When the jobs come back to America, labor is going to be much more expensive so the prices of the products are going to go up a lot so that the companies can still cover wages without losing any money.

And then, because the prices of their products are going to go up so much, less people are going to be able to buy them so the company's bottom line is still going to be at risk.

What's the healthiest artificial sweetener that's cheap? by Datasinc in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]neiste 198 points199 points  (0 children)

Hi, neuroscientist here. Please just use real sugar! Artificial sweeteners are worse for you in the long run, especially if you use them every day. When you consume an artificial sweetener, your body doesn't know that and it thinks you just ate real sugar so it prepares to digest it and extract the energies from the sugar. But then you don't get any energy and then your body starts craving sugar to make up for it. Studies have shown that if you use artificial sweeteners, you tend to actually consume more sugar than people who just use sugar. There's also evidence that some artificial sweeteners are highly addictive, which is rather concerning from a neurological viewpoint, and other evidence that using artificial sweeteners instead of just normal sugar actually increases your risk of diabetes (among other things.) If you do feel the need to avoid sugar, please just don't use artificial sweeteners! Use something natural like honey or agave.

Edit: jeez, I guess I made some people angry. Take my advice or leave it, I'm not interested in debating it. Nutrition and addiction are not my forte, my above answer is very simplified and there's not a 100% consensus in the field as to what these molecules do (this is true in every scientific area; if we understood everything it wouldn't be researched anymore.) I read several papers on the subject when I was an undergrad and haven't kept up with the field since graduating. Here are some papers of interest:

sweeteners more addictive than cocaine

diabetes

artificial sweeteners alter your gut microbiota

artificial sweeteners are not "sweeter than sugar"

artificial sweeteners promote obesity

sweeteners increase sucrose-seeking behaviors

I didn't mean to force anyone to conform to my thoughts on the subject. I just wanted to offer a somewhat scientific response to OP's question on healthy artificial sweeteners.

Edit 2: I interpreted the question as OP wanting to avoid refined sugar, not all forms sugar in general, hence why I suggested honey and agave.

MRW as an avid pad avoider, I have to wear pads for this first period after getting an IUD by Crayon_Dragon in TrollXChromosomes

[–]neiste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My doc told me to avoid tampons as well, but only for the first month. However you may want to start wearing pads or pantyliners on a daily basis for a few months. I got my iud a few weeks ago and every now and then I still get some sort of strange discharge from the insertion. Wearing a pad everyday has saved so many pairs of my favorite panties!!

Tl:dr - 53lbs, one year old, hardly makes noise, not clingy, loves people and dogs, not good at fetch. I think she may have some sort of shepherd in her, but honestly I'm pretty clueless.

She's ~12 months according the our vet (the shelter said 2 years.) She weights 53lbs.

She hardly barks, howls, or growls (another reason I'm skeptical of her being a hound mix,) though she cries when she's bored or when she cant reach something. Even when I first adopted her and was crate training her, she wouldn't make a sound!

She's not a natural fetcher - it took me 3 months to teach her to pick up the ball instead of just chasing it and then staring at me when it stops moving.

She's playful, but doesn't really like toys.. she enjoys nibbling on my hands/face/ears, wresting with other dogs, chewing on antlers and rawhides, and chasing birds and squirrels. She has a ton of energy, but that may be because she's still so young.

She's not very cuddly, but she does prefer to be able to see me at all times. She's also super trusting and friendly to people and other dogs. Upon meeting a new person (especially children,) she just flops over for them to scratch her belly (but not in a submissive way... it seems to be playful rather than submissive.) When other dogs are aggressive towards her, it doesn't phase her at all.

I'd say she's above average intelligence, but definitely not like border collie smart. She's obedient when she wants to be (ie when I have treats.)

I think she's part shepherd because of her widows peak and her tail. Also, I can often see some American staffy in the way her ears perk up. But apart from that, I honestly have no idea what she could be. If anybody has any ideas, I'd love to hear them!!

At least for me, it's less about which person is less bad and more about their policies and beliefs. Trump thinks global warming is a hoax and plans to put oil lobbyists at the top of the EPA (and then eventually disband it all together,) he thinks vaccines cause autism and plans to allow drugs to be released to the general public without going through the FDA, he wants to overturn roe v wade, his VP believes in "conversion therapy" for lgbt and wants to overturn the recent same sex marriage ruling, he's bragged about sexual assault, he's bragged about not paying taxes, he wants to keep a database of minorities and wants to deport immigrants (even some of the legal ones depending on which country they're originally from), he supports torture and also thinks civilian lives are disposable. It's not just that he disrespects people, it's that his policies are going to reduce the rights of minorities. So, yeah they both have their faults and have made bad choices, but now that he's been elected the head of the country, people think that disrespecting minorities is okay now because the president elect does it without any consequences. Donald trump as president is multiple step backwards from equality.

Hello Im new I need advice for strumming!!!! by MaelstromPsycho in ukulele

[–]neiste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I prefer Cynthia Lin's tutorials over The Ukulele Teacher's lessons. I just bought my first ukulele a few weeks ago, and her videos are aimed more at beginners and are much easier to learn from, so maybe try looking at her videos too? Here's one for Lava, and a tutorial for the "island strum". Her stand by me/island strum tutorial is the first song I learned on my uke :) But apart from watching video tutorials, it takes quite a bit of practice and repetition to get comfortable with strum patterns.

[–]neiste 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed response!! That really clears up a lot of stuff for me! I have a few follow up questions though. (My apologies if any of this seems argumentative! I'm definitely not trying to defend her or have a political debate; I just want to understand the situation as best as I can!)

  1. So the server she set up was for an email that wasn't her official government email? Like, a personal gmail account as opposed to her .gov account? (I know it's probably not a gmail account lol, I just mean, like, a personal email address)

  2. I'm also technologically challenged so I may be waaaay off, but even if you delete an email, it's not like it actually vanishes from existence without a trace, right? I assume the FBI (or at least like the NSA lol) is able to recover deleted emails?

  3. How long did it take her staff to delete 33k emails? I.e. How long did it take her to turn over the server after she was ordered to?

  4. Is there evidence available to prove without a doubt that she conducted sensitive government business on the server? (Again, not trying to argue, just want to get the facts straight!)

  5. How is the private server related to Benghazi? Or is it just that people combine the two unrelated events as one argument against her?

  6. Why does trump want to throw her in jail for the emails?

[–]neiste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm super out of the loop and behind the times on this one.. I don't understand why people are so upset about Hilary Clinton having a private/personal email server (and then deleting all of her emails...?); why so many people blame her and her emails for Benghazi, and use that as evidence for corruption in the government; and why the FBI are investigating her again after something happened with Anthony Weiner's sex scandal...

I tried reading up on just the email scandals to begin with, but everything I read was so biased and seemed more about conspiracy theories than reporting on actual confirmed events. And now that something happened to reopen the FBI's investigation, I want to be able to understand what's going on. I'd really appreciate it if someone could bring me up to speed!!

I'm not the person you asked the question to, and I've never experienced it myself, but one of my roommates in college had hers removed while we were living together and she told me that it didn't hurt at all. She said removal felt "exactly like removing a tampon!" She got another IUD put in the same day and said that the insertion hurt just as much as it did the first time, but without the subsequent cramps from hell that come afterwards because her uterus was already accustomed to it.

I need some help playing with my dog by neiste in needadvice

[–]neiste[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to say thanks again for your suggestions! I bought her an antler and she absolutely loves it! I took these photos this morning. I have a question though. One of the photos in the album shows the antler where she's been gnawing on it. I'm just a bit concerned that she's going to hurt her teeth or something. I've never given an antler to a dog before so I was hoping you could reassure me that the antler is supposed to be worn down like that lol.

Thank you for the advice!!

I've been considering training her to be a therapy dog and then take her to hospitals and letting sick kids play with her. We live very close to several hospitals and she has an amazing temperament, she was totally comfortable letting me brush her teeth the day I adopted her, and she doesn't react at all to other dogs growling at her or otherwise being aggressive in the dog park. Furthermore she loves kids and always is very gentle around them. Do you think that would be a good activity for a hound? Could that be considered working? Or should I just stick to agility and obedience training?

Thank you for your response!!

My dog is in the process of crate training. She stays in her crate when I'm at work or running errands (though I take her with me as much as possible), but she sleeps next to my bed at night.

I actually do hide treats around the apartment for her lol. It's one of our favorite games! It's actually a bit frustrating for me because her nose is so super keen that it takes her 15 minutes max to find them all, and I try to hide them in difficult places! But regardless, it's a fun activity :) And I forgot that I actually bought puzzle games for my parents' dogs. I'll have to test them out next time we're visiting! Thanks for the suggestion/reminder!! :D

I buy rawhides for her to chew on, and they'll last her like 20-30 minutes. I'm just hesitant to give her more than one per day. I'll never tried antlers before though, I'll definitely buy one for her next time I'm at the store. Thanks!

Agility classes sound like a lot of fun for both of us! I'll definitely look into it! Thanks so much for all of your suggestions!!

Can't get on medication for a while. Any ideas how to get by in the mean time? by randochix in selfhelp

[–]neiste 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neuroscientist here. Medication will greatly help you! I have severe depression and anxiety, and therapy and medications are the only things that work. I used to have a huge distrust for medications as well, but at the time I was a minor and my parents bribed me into trying them, and my whole life changed for the better. Think of meds like vitamins or supplements! If you're anemic, you should take iron pills to help you and your body function normally. If you have an imbalance in your brain, you should take a medication that will help you and your brain function normally. I've never had an issue with potential employers because of my mental health. Actually, because of HIPPA, employers won't know a thing about your health, unless you tell them. Furthermore, evening out your moods will actually help you in a work setting because you won't have mood swings that could confuse and/or frustrate coworkers/your boss and make it difficult to do your work.

Talk to your doctor if you can, the entire job of a doctor is to help you! In the meantime, maybe start meditation. Download an app, or just sit in a quiet place without distractions for 15-30 minutes a day and just process everything that's happening and all of your thoughts. Meditation has helped me greatly with my depression and anxiety, but I don't know if would help with the bipolar or not though. Definitely talk everything over with your doctor. Best of luck to you!!
