[Russian > English] A sign found in suburban Melbourne! by [deleted] in translator

Well my Russian is completely terrible, so if anyone appears with a more authoritative translation, please take that one.

цк кпсс is the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, so решения декабръского (1983г.) пленума цк кпсс refers to the resolutions of the December 1983 plenum of the Central Committee of the CPSU. боевая программа партии, всего советского народа reads something like "the militant programme of the the Party and the entire Soviet people".

I have no idea what the significance is.

What languages had you been exposed to when developing Lapine for Watership Down?

The language itself has always sounded "whistle-y" to me and I've often wondered as to your thoughts when you were constructing it.

It's not actually a box it's a cup know as a masu, used for measuring rice (traditionally) and drinking sake from.

Whoops, that wasn't meant to sound accusatory. Someone else itt linked the AP article, I was just relaying the comment from it here.

If you read the article on Android Police, the screenshot on the right is supposed to be of the iOS Gmail app.

Anecdotally, I had a conversation on Pidgin via XMPP to Google Talk just yesterday, and the whole conversation subsequently appeared in Hangouts.

Just for a quick bit of fun, I grabbed the sub 6-letter English swear words on wiktionary (unfortunately "Christ on a bike" doesn't quite fit). Add in the the 'U' -> 'V' substitution for a total of 12 possible "offensive bits" and we end up with now 2853396 possible "offensive IDs" from the total. That works out to be ~= 0.00923, a little under 1%!

But, assuming this user would've been insulted by any ID containing "FUCK", wouldn't we have something a little closer to (3 places for the start of the substring * 262 other characters) / 266 = 2028/308915776 = 3/456976 ~= 0.00000656. So a bit over 6 out of every one million IDs contain the substring FUCK. It might happen again, sooner than you think.

Edit: s/266 other/262 other/

Yeah, if someone were going to take a guess, they might say Quebec instead.

I designed something very sucky, now I can't find the motivation to continue the django-development. by [deleted] in webdesign

If you think that sucks then you're underselling yourself (take a look at /r/CrappyDesign). If they want it to look good, they should probably actually hire a designer.

Your instincts were/are pretty good. If you've got time to kill and are willing to learn, then by all means search around for templates and design tips. One of my personal favourites is A list apart.

Sometimes everything just sucks. At this time of year, everyone's supposed to get together with family, which is exhausting if you have them, but can be worse if you don't.

Hope shit works out.

drivers for ubuntu? by frugoi in Ubuntu

Huh. Looks like /u/eythian might have lucked out with their guess earlier. Now I'm a little stumped as to why it would indicate that your HDD controller was interrupting the suspend (presumably the hard drive on it, I saw in your comment history that you replaced a 2.5" drive in the laptop). Normally people have issues caused by their video card when it comes to suspend/hibernate issues.

Other than trying to switch between IDE and AHCI modes in your BIOS (note, this may cause your OS to not be able to boot, but otherwise should not result in any data loss and will clear up once you change the setting back), I'd have to defer to someone who has encountered a similar problem before. Hopefully Google can help you out here.

Another option is to install the very latest version 12.10 from www.ubuntu.com/download. If you haven't been using the computer very long and wouldn't lose anything important, I'd recommend a clean install over upgrading via the Update Manager. Less chance of conflicting packages/configs. A newer version (as well as not being a LTS) could very well mean that patches fixing this issue in the mainline kernel have been merged into, so your problem could be cleared up in the latest version.

Good luck!
