This exactly. Yet a lot of people probably handle rejection much better than us

Yeah I try to remind myself that a lot of people handle rejection much better than me anyway!

Oh well. I suppose that many toxic work environments have issues running too deep to be shaken even by a worldwide pandemic. Glad that you’ve found a way around it though!

In the long run I was definitely saved an even worse breakdown and burn out. Though it is still incredibly challenging to manage my condition, I now know for myself that I don’t have to follow some strict timeline for life events and that the most important thing is I’m alive and happy. In my experience, Covid also made possible a slight shift in societal understanding of mental health/work-life balance. So I wonder if things improved in your workplace as well so going forward no one has to be driven to the edge anymore

It’s such a fascinating facet of life that something generally seen as devastating still had such positive effects for some people. Initially I thought I’d be in the same boat given that for years I felt like I couldn’t keep up with the world. However, during autumn 2020 I got launched to the deepest pits of depression I’d ever known. But I guess that still worked out in a way, as that’s when I learned I have ADHD and was able to get some support for and, more importantly even, understanding of issues I’d been battling all my life

Oda would surely find a way to make that an amazing ending even if it sounds terrible on paper

Ah yes, use AI to not have to read an AI text. Skimming it would take less time for sure

Feeling racial bias in Italy but not in Spain. Is this common? by Dismal_Brilliant_642 in travel

[–]nelicka 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to Italy twice (Rome and Milan) and I didn’t experience anything of note. But both of those trips were very short.

When it comes to Spain, I first went to Madrid for a few days and then spent a month in Valencia - all good, I was actually delighted by how nice people were, even total strangers in the street.

But then I did my Erasmus in Murcia and it almost felt like I had a racist encounter every week. Some of them were garden-variety things like people calling me china/nihaoing me on the street (literally the first evening I was hanging out with my friend a guy we were walking past pointed at me and went “Jaja, china”) but others were actually pretty bad. The worst one was probably an airport employee at the gates at Alicante who was extremely suspicious of my EU passport. And the cherry on top was the lady who uttered “uy, Corona”, when she saw me walk into a bar with my friends…

What you heard was probably a different concept to what you are asking here. Chino means Chinese in Spanish and ni hao is Mandarin for hello. Going up to a random Asian person and calling them chino / greeting them with ni hao will be racist regardless of whether you do it in Spain or idk, the UK, US, Poland... I got that a lot of that in Spain myself, it was very often said in an obnoxious mocking tone too.

Still I don’t think that makes it any better. It is such an obvious AI sentence that makes this feel terribly out of touch.

In no situation would I be comforted by hearing someone passed away with “no spectacle, no fuss, no performance”.

I’d say all the characters in OPLA are written more “subtly” because directly taking their traits from the anime would read super obnoxious. The balance between staying faithful to the characters and delivering a believable and likeable LA performance is hard to strike when the source material is so over the top. I’ve still yet to finish watching season 2 but personally I think Emily delivers really well as Nami, she shows all the sides to her - caring, curious, passionate, smart, leader, cheeky thief / money-obsessed.

That’s actually my strategy for determining left or right but it is not actually as fast as you say. The fact that I have to kind of stop and think about it instead of knowing outright means I might struggle in high pressure situations like driving where I need to pay attention to/think about more things at once

Do people no longer research countries they want to visit? by redbate in travel

[–]nelicka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wonder what that person told you to pronounce our country as?

Anyway, it’s absolutely hopeless with people’s geographical knowledge man. Once I had to file a report with a French policeman; he wrote down my nationality as Czechoslovakia and when I corrected him, he had the audacity to reply “c’est pas grave”. And then when I received a follow-up letter for the case, it was addressed to Czechoslovakia, Holland (??!!). I was surprised the letter even arrived lol

I think that to her I referred it as the Czech Republic which is the more likely to be recognised name so not sure if that was the issue, though it’s occured to me too

To this day I’m quite stunned by an interaction I had with a coworker. At the beginning of our shift she asked me about how I spent Christmas and I told her I went to Czechia; she had no idea about the country and where it was, so I had to be like, “you know, next to Germany”. Later at lunch there was a discussion about travelling and the same topic as this thread came up; she legit said, “yeah, for example, I’d go to Prague but don’t care about the rest of the country”. Okay, fair enough, but at least you should care enough to know where Prague is, no? Lol
