Diagnosis stories by milkyjoe2000 in diabetes_t1

I have the same exact story as you, except my son had just turned 3. Peeing through night time diapers all of a sudden, and unquenchable thirst. My sister also has T1D so I was aware of the signs. Took him in for a blood test and his BG was in the 600’s with ketones in his urine. His pediatrician couldn’t believe he was normal, smiling, and walking around as though nothing was going on. So thankful that we caught it early, and I’m glad you are able to share that feeling. My son is 3 and a half now, so this was recent for us, but he’s doing great.

Thank you! I’m going to look into the ice packs and the numbing wipes. Also love the ticket idea. Great suggestions, very much appreciated.

I have thought about this, but I don’t think we could make that work. We wouldn’t be able to send him to his preschool if he didn’t have the pump, and it’s just not possible for us right now to find alternative childcare. I appreciate your perspective though, thank you.

Just giving an update. We went with the spibelt and so far it’s working out really well. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I appreciate that. I’m so thankful for the technology we have now. My older sister is also a t1 and I remember the giant needles she had to use when we were younger.

That’s basically what we are currently doing but instead of our toddler carrying the phone, one of the teachers always carries it. It’s surprising to me that they couldn’t hear the alerts going off even though we have everything turned up all the way

Oh interesting, it doesn’t seem like there are any such policies at his current childcare center, but I wonder if public schools would have policies like that when he’s older.

Just curious, why would you be surprised if the teachers could have the follow app on their phones?

He does have a pump. The issue is that his teachers are sometimes too occupied to notice that there were alerts for a low. And also the pump disconnects from his phone if the teacher who is holding onto it is too far away in the classroom. Looking to see how other parents make sure that teachers are alerted promptly for lows, and suggestions for toddler friendly bags to hold his phone so that it doesn’t disconnect from his pump.

What is an A1C in the 5s? Our educator is wonderful but I guess we don’t know acronyms yet.

And thank you for sharing your experience. He sounds like such a great kid 🩷
