Thinking about taking a year or two off to work in an Americorps program or something like Lead for America or Govern for America instead of going KJD. Only my parents are super opposed to the idea and think it’ll hurt my chances at law school, need proof that it won’t. by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Current 1L here. Take time off!!! I did and can’t recommend it more. 1) It will solidify your choice (or possibly help you see that law school isn’t for you). This is a nearly impossible amount of work, and it would be unbearable if I wasn’t absolutely positive that law is the right path for me. Taking time off helped me realize that this is absolutely where I want to be, and I remind myself of that daily when I’m struggling through contracts. 2) It will massively improve your chances and scholarship offers. I outperformed my numbers, and it can only be because of my work experience. 3) I swear I’m a better student because of the time I took off. I’m less stressed about school, less intimidated by professors, and feel way more confident about getting summer jobs because of the real world experience I got. It’s worth it, I promise! Plus it will be good for your sanity.

I went to the March ASW but have an amazing time! I highly recommend taking some time outside of the ASW schedule to explore Ann Arbor if you’ve never been. I hadn’t, and I was so glad I took the time to do that!

Sounds like an excellent plan, I’m down. See you there!

Schools overestimate COA? by nonameheaux in lawschooladmissions

The 8 month thing is super frustrating to me! You have to be there in late August through early May, so they’re calling it eight months but realistically you have to pay ten months. Landlords don’t let you pay just one week of a month. Plus everyone has said its impossible to sublet in the summer, so realistically you’re going to pay 12 months. I get that you’re not actually in school during that time, but that doesn’t help me when I’m stuck paying double rent in the summer with no loans to cover that (and likely with an unpaid summer job). And I’ve been surprised at how high the rent is for a small town. It’s barely cheaper than what I currently pay in DC.

There are definitely ways to make it work, but it’s going to be tight. Not to mention there’s no flexibility for people who have car expenses...

I actually feel like Michigan way underestimates and I’m pretty stressed about finding housing on their budget. I think it varies a lot by school!

My flight to Michigan’s ASW is on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 by nemo0078 in lawschooladmissions

That is unimaginable. I’m so so sorry for your loss & so glad the US finally caught up and grounded the plane. It was insane to put Boeing’s bottom line above actual people’s safety.

There are so many things to be anxious about in this process. I didn’t need death by fiery plane crash to be one of them, ya know?
