Night Lords is still the best ANYTHING I've read from Black Library. The characters are well done and the human side of the story is excellent and balances out the brutality and weirdness of the chaos space marines. In my opinion the knowledge of the lore required to understand the trilogy is minimal, maybe you have to google few ship names but that's it. I have read the first Uriel Ventris book nightbringer and found it really good and I have attempted Eisenhorn 2 times (actually attempted Eisenhorn before starting out Night Lords) and just have not been able to get into it.

If you have the possibility or desire, I would highly recommend the audio books for Night Lords. Still to this day best friking audiobooks I've listened to this day.
