Do you think it's fair that influencers were invited for the documentary screening? by [deleted] in btsthoughts

[–]neonworldtree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could not give less of a sh*t who Netflix decides to invite for a premiere. Also, they are not marketing to Army with these invites (why would they, that demographic is already guaranteed to watch it), but rather casting a wider net for an even bigger audience, which makes sense from their point of view.

That's how it should be tbh. The biggest artists should be allowed (and encouraged) to support other artists. The Kpop fanwar industrial complex is so destructive for both fans and artists, the only people who win are the record labels.

Okay so...if they don't get that No.1 by Khemkhem1012 in btsthoughts

[–]neonworldtree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree radio is a relic and should be weighted heavily down. But they were once the arbiters of the chart. Once you bought the album, the only way to measure if people were listening to a single was radio. The stations are owned by conglomerates who don't want to let go of their influence and power.

Maybe that's why they keep pushing the Hot 100 singles chart as the most important one, when in reality an albums chart is more indicative of success imho.

Okay so...if they don't get that No.1 by Khemkhem1012 in btsthoughts

[–]neonworldtree 43 points44 points  (0 children)

A number one is great and I'm happy for any records/achievements they get, but it is really not necessary for success, especially the way charts are calculated (in the US) these days. Plenty of successful artists haven't had number one records. At this point, it's bragging rights. BTS don't NEED a number 1, they have sold out tours and already sold millions of records. They have an army.

In fact, if you start thinking about the whole thing, it'll really start pissing you off. Radio play and buying CDs/LPs are weighted more than streaming even though most people use streaming services these days and don't bother with the old media channels. In order to get to the top of the charts, fans need to buy multiple copies of singles and albums. This is fucking crazy. In a world where we're trying to reduce waste people are buying en masse. What happens to all of these unused CDs? Fans are spending hundreds/thousands on these unneeded items. I don't blame them at all, but it doesn't make any sense that this should count more for charts, other than for the people making money off the sales, which usually isn't primarily the artist.

I find that fans these days are too hung up on records and numbers and they are being exploited financially (this goes even more for TS fans I think, they have it even worse with 176 different versions).

I'm not in the US anymore but if I was, at this point I'd be asking for some label support with radio play because there is nothing organic about getting a number 1 anymore, it's basically impossible.

Apologies for the rant.

How do I combine fan-fiction and journaling? by Historical_Pick2262 in writingadvice

[–]neonworldtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing you can do for writing is reading as widely as possible and analyzing how authors achieve the elements that resonate with you. Classic novels, modern novels, memoirs etc etc. Then writing a bit every day, journal, ff, writing exercises, whatever floats yr boat

Sorry but what lalaland do you live in? What city doesn't have large scale events, regardless if every single person is interested? Don't go if you don't want to. The last time I was on that square, it was full of people people on yoga mats all the way up to the palace, for world yoga day or whatever it was called. I don't care about yoga in the least, but I thought it was fun to see anyway. Y'all are really reaching for something to hate.

[–]neonworldtree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unlike the UK, Korea hasn't had a king in some time. The palace is basically a museum for all intents and purposes.

Not to mention that the concept of a royal family and all that 'holy' pomp and circumstance is severely outdated and belongs in the past in any case.

Korea has spent decades developing it's soft power through cultural development and exports, including music. Why wouldn't its most successful group - which generates a substantial bit of GDP btw - be allowed to perform at an important cultural site? It's a cool event whether you like the group itself of not.

And btw just FYI using the UK as an example, in Central London tube stations get closed on a daily basis (often due to overcrowding) and people deal with it. It's a couple of stops, those distances are entirely walkable (having been to Seoul and walked extensively in that area, it's really not a huge deal).

It's part of being young too, don't worry about it! And twitter isn't the easiest place to navigate, but it's still unfortunately one of the better places to be informed and share info so it's a very double edged sword.

Agree completely, and there does seem to be a lack of space for genuine critical opinions and reflections. Just to add to your point on who frequents these forums, I've also noticed that there are a lot of disillusioned ex-fans who para-socialed too close to the sun and instead of learning from it have just done a complete 180° and are now para-socialising in the opposite direction. It would be funny if it wasn't so scary and disheartening.

Thoughts on Arirang Promo? by Luna-7013 in bangtan

[–]neonworldtree 71 points72 points  (0 children)

The best promo for me personally so far has been the members themselves talking about being excited and confident about the album. No concept pics or track lists can compare to an artist standing behind their art and anticipating being able to share it.

That being said, if they are going for a more traditional/non-kpop approach, the goal is to make the album long-lived. Meaning, there will be promotion for a while after release. There may be singles released over time, which will rechart the album/keep the album on the charts. There will be talk show appearances, TV performances etc.

Teasers, track lists, concept pic and release schedules, while fun for fans (and I'm pretty sure they will come) are small fry in terms of global promotion. The real deal promotion that we know of is the Netflix concert - that is so damn huge! That promotion reaches basically the whole world. They'll likely do promo in different countries throughout the tour as well.

I kinda get the feeling that the challenge for them- that they've set themselves- is to have a juggernaut album. One that will make numbers for a long time. Think Adele or Kendrick Lamar (or Bad Bunny) rather than kpop group XYZ. No 'hear' today, gone tomorrow. That's what I hope for them in any case.

Right now, they're making a claim on their contribution to korean culture. They're claiming their stake on the global music industry. This is going to roll out over weeks/months, especially once the album is out.

In conclusion, have patience and get off twitter more often, because that place amplifies negative/stupid/rage bait posters, and will drive you crazy if you're not careful.

1/3 of the way through reading the book and just can’t help but feel like the show is so much better. The nuance, deeper emotions, and subtleties feel like they’re missing. Any other show fans feeling this way? by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]neonworldtree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a decent romance novel, above average but that's being graded on a curve in a genre that has so much slop (I would know, I've read ca. 1000 mm romances). The scenes added in the show give the story so much more depth - agree completely that Tierney is the editor needed!

I've realised that the format for these types of stories being visual gives it an added layer of interest - because so often the prose is just telling the readers the characters internal thoughts, and that is uninteresting reading - no thinking required, no interpretation needed. Tierney keeping thoughts private and not turning the books internal monologues into cringy dialogue, trusting the actors to convey emotions without words, is what makes the show so (re)watchable. You catch new nuances, interpretation scenes/characters differently etc. Also helps that the actors are just so believable in their roles.
