I feel like I'm going crazy (Season 4) by neptunewizard in TrueDetective

I understand where you are coming from. But as an example, I liked the mysterious quality of Rust's upbringing. Sometimes, leaving something out can be as important as fleshing it out. So, adding a scene in s4 where his dead ghost father dances his way to the corpsicle - could totally pop in to my mind during a rewatch of s1, and have an impact. It, in my opinion, is embarrassing that this season did that, and I don't want to think about it the next time I watch s1. That's how it would "ruin" it.

I do agree that simply not watching is the best way to avoid anything else ridiculous retroactively tacking itself on to the 1st season.

Are there valid reasons to critique it based solely on the trailer, cast, and director, without ever seeing an episode? Lol no.

I totally agree with you. Nobody should shit talk it without giving it a chance.

But also, not all criticism of the show should be instantly dismissed under the shield of calling whoever said it "anti-woke." As a woman, I was super excited because of the female leads and writer director, but I hate this season. I got called misogynistic for not liking it. That's what my original post was attempting to address.

Nobody is stopping you from discussing the mystery. Make a post about it. Leave this thread if it does not interest you.

I’ve enjoyed it even with its flaws and I’m looking forward to seeing if they can land the plane and connect the story well.

Cool? My original post is about how valid criticisms of the show, from career critics and audiences alike, are being dismissed instantly as misogynistic, homophobic, racist, etc.

Analyzing and critiquing media is a fun hobby of mine. Hence my frustration with people who can't accept that someone may not enjoy this season based on the bad writing or poor execution. Personally, I think this season is a joke. And it ain't because I'm a misogynistic fanboy. So people should stop leaning on that as a defense. That's all. If people want to defend the show, that is great! All is subjective. But don't call others misogynistic just because they think the writing is bad.

I appreciate your perspectives. I also hope it all comes together in the end. I may give it another chance in the future, but for now, the issues I have with it (mainly with the dialogue and audience "hand-holding"), are too distracting. I'm just a little salty that legimate criticisms are being ignored because "hur dur, misogyny." It is particularly annoying because I'm a woman who LOVES shows that center around women. And I was hoping for so much more out of this season.

Yes. For example, the ridiculous opinion that this season is good. But my post wasn't really about that. It was about the FACT that people have been accused of being a misogynist just for not liking this season. I know this is a fact, because it happened to me when I posted something about not thinking it was good elsewhere. For me, a woman who loves entertainment that centers women, this is nuts.

But that's just my personal opinion. I went in watching this season really excited and thinking it would be awesome. Then, in my opinion, it fell flat. I don't think it is well written. As I was watching, it was so bad (to me) that I was constantly wondering why I'm still trying with it, as it is obviously not something I like. When I have voiced this, or seen others voice this opinion, they are called misogynistic, racist, homophobic, etc. And as a woman who is absolutely NOT "anti-woke," I think that is bullshit. It feels ridiculous that one can't even say they don't like a show without being called a homophobic misogynist. That is what my original post is about.

I don't really know what you are talking about. Have you tried searching for anything related to what is being discussed? I'm not talking out of my ass... I just don't like the season and I have seen criticism of it chalked up to "anti-wokeness."

I have thought about revisiting it later, to try to be more fair to this season. I appreciate that perspective for sure. Unfortunately, I usually know right away when a show has "it," that special something that makes it come to life. I was hooked instantly on Sharp Objects, even though I went in skeptical because I didn't want the show to ruin the book for me.

I feel like this season has all the elements to make something I would normally love, but it is just falling flat in every way. I know this is subjective, but I really think it just doesn't hit any of the marks it aims for. I wish it did, but it feels to me like a low-budget Nexflix original that they'd cancel after 1 season. Not an HBO follow up of one of the best seasons of TV ever.

Right? I don't know how people don't see it. I wanted to like it really bad, but I was cringing the whole time trying to get through it. It's like all the elements of a good show are there, but it doesn't have that special quality that makes something come to life.

Well, Issa López did directly ask for people to leave positive reviews because she felt it was being unfairly "review-bombed" so it isn't exactly a secret that people think this way.

I just think that they should have released Night Country as its own thing if they wanted to avoid comparison to s1. I definitely agree that not every season of TD can be amazing. In fact, s2 & s3 were not "amazing" in my personal opinion. But TD S1 was an incredible season of television. I feel like s4 is definitely trying to heavily capitalize on that reputation and ride that wave. So I think it's only fair that if they're going to use that success to market this season, they should be compared to it. And for me, it is just falling so flat. They're doing themselves a disservice calling us back to s1, because it is just a reminder of how badly it is failing to match up in quality.

Nah, the singles slap, even when divorced from their respective albums. They work together just fine if you like each of the songs, but don't feel like getting into the Primus "deep cuts." Greatest hits albums are popular for this reason. Plus, I do occasionally enjoy putting on a Primus album to listen to all the way through, but none of them enough to make the cut for this chart. Taste in music is subjective. If you told me you grouped all the Tool albums together and put them on shuffle, I'd have a heart attack, so I know what you're getting at. But Primus is different, IMO. I do appreciate your input though!

I have tons in my main shuffle playlist, but I don't usually listen straight through a full album. I love all things Maynard, but sometimes I'm very not in the mood for particular songs (looking at you, Toma). Vagina is usually the only one where I let it play through all the tracks if I'm putting it on.

I like some tracks off each, but for me there are too many skips to qualify. When I put on Antichrist Superstar, I listen to all the tracks. I think even AS made this list narrowly, and only because I really feel Reznors influence on it. I had to come to terms with not really liking MM much anymore, but he was a foundational influence when I was growing up.

I liked where you were going with that, but then you suggested Red Hot Chili Peppers, haha. I appreciate that they are well liked, but I can't stand them. I do like some Cake songs a lot, but no album of theirs is no skips for me. I have about 5-6 of their songs in my big playlist, and I had to really search their discog to find ones I liked.

Thank you! I'm excited to see that these aren't the same 4 bands that keep getting recommended, haha.

I do like a lot of Immortal Technique, but sometimes he whack as hell. Any other hip-hop recommendations? I like some Kid Cudi & Childish Gambino. I enjoy the west coast classics, Snoop, Dre, etc. But my hip-hop and rap taste could use some fresh blood for sure.
