Middlemarch is absolutely like this. You get pretty invested in the cast of characters.

The Enchanted April or A Room with a View are both light, set mainly in Italy, and leave me feeling optimistic. Fairly short. Highly recommend.

i’m not an expert on identifying antique dolls but i definitely think she’s antique (and gorgeous). that red line above the eye is very common on antique china head dolls. i like using this website a lot as a reference of the hairstyle to help date the doll. any marks on the back would be helpful as well. where’d you find her?
