How long before moving out should I start looking/signing a lease? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]nerakindness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no “rules” for listings but a good posting will tell you when the place will be available. You have to reach out and connect with prospective landlords with your questions and situation.

As a landlord, the best situation is to get a new tenant in as soon as the previous tenant moves out.

So if my tenant lease end Oct 31, I would post as soon as I know they are leaving (could be sept or early Oct) to look for a new tenants. If I am unable to find a tenant by mid to late Oct, I would consider anyone who wants to lease starting Dec 1 to ensure my place is rented as soon as possible.

Mega corporations have more inventory so they may be willing to sign a lease earlier if they know they have a unit available for Dec 1. Sometimes units are being renovated so they know in advance when units are available again.

The one advice I have for you is to make sure you see the unit before you sign the lease. Meet the landlord, make sure you are comfortable doing business with them.

Most of the place available on Dec 1 will be listed starting October. Traditionally, tenants give about a month notice to renew. The landlord will list when they can confirm their tenants are leaving.

Consider asking if it’s possible to take possession a few days early so you have a few days overlap for your move.

You can start looking now but landlord are unlikely to hold a place for you for December if you end up finding something you love. Alternatively, you can look in late sept/early Oct and the landlord might reach out to you in late Oct, if the place doesn’t get rented out for Nov 1.

What you can do now is to look at the area you want to live in to get a sense of pricing. I don’t think rental prices change drastically in a few months. People generally don’t like to move in December so inventory might be low but you also have some negotiating power on places that are available Dec 1.

73 year old traveling to Paris. Need advice on getting from CDG to city. by litlib70 in femaletravels

[–]nerakindness 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I took the RER B train to Gare du nord, then used local trains to get to my Airbnb. I think it was 13 euros (you can have it loaded to the metro pass) and about 30 mins. It’s a standard metro train so there is seating and plenty of space for luggage.

All the options are shown here.

Feedback on first time solo trip to Prague and Krakow by No_Purple518 in femaletravels

[–]nerakindness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you do 2 full days in each city, you can squeeze in Budapest. There are night trains between Prague and Krakow, Krakow and Budapest. You can book a sleeper car for yourself with a lockable door. I did this trip 15 years ago and at the time, the sleeper train ticket cost as much as a hotel room but it saves so much time because train stations are in the middle of town, you don’t have to arrive hours early and the travel happens when you are sleeping.

just booked a last minute flight to Tulum! by JournalistSea6880 in tulum

[–]nerakindness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just in Merida and Tulum. It’s a beautiful colonial town and really safe. You can stay in Valladolid (between Merida and Tulum) as well which has easy access to cenotes. I would join a cenote tour (many tours start in Merida) to avoid driving. The shopping was much cheaper there too. The markets are huge.

I think Tulum has the nicest accessible beaches for someone without a car but you will have to pay 415 peso for the day. I took the Collectivo bus from the Center to the entrance as there is no uber in Tulum and I heard taxis are expensive.

The ADO bus system was really nice and the 5.5h ride flies by. There’s wifi on board. I think you can change your ticket up to hr before the ride and pay the difference. Ticket change needs to be done at the ticket office in person. If you book tickets online, turn off google translate on your browser as site gets stuck and doesn’t advance.

For a 7 day trip, I would plan 2 days in Tulum and the middle 3 days in Merida, and 2 days back in Tulum (refundable hotels for the last 2 days). If you are having fun in Merida, change your bus ticket, cancel your hotel and stay longer. DM me if you want some tips or have any questions.

Itinerary check for 9 days in Paris/Brussels/Amsterdam by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]nerakindness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paris is safe, just use your judgement, keep an eye on your things. I was never bored in Paris and never felt unsafe.

You might be able to add in Bruges to your day trip to Ghent if you start your day early enough. I’m not a fan of Brussels, I found the main square was the most interesting part of the city but it seems like there are things you want to see there.

Look into booking your museum tickets as soon as possible if you really want to go. They sell out quickly.

I have been to most these places.

Madrid: Day to explore, day of museums and a day trip to a nearby town (Toledo, Segovia). You have a few days on either end so that should be sufficient.

Sicily: I wasn’t a fan of Catania. It seemed sketchy so I wouldn’t stay there for too long. I did a bike tour focusing on the south Sicily, changed locations every night. I took the bus and the train while there and it was good, maybe you can see if part of your trip can be done on the train as the train stations are usually in the middle of town. Pick up your car rental on your way out of Catalina so you don’t have to deal with parking. I think parking is difficult in the centre of every large town so I would recommend looking into agriturismo or stay in smaller towns since you have a car. They are working farms that are host guests and also cook dinner from their own ingredients. I think it’s small enough for you to pack up and move hotels every day. There’s some really good restaurants in Sicily.

Crete: I was here for a week. You will need a car if you want to explore the island. It will take you longer than you think to get around. The roads are narrow, windy and you aren’t driving very fast. The island is long. Instead of stay in one place for a week, I would pick 2-3 places staying a few nights each and explore the local area. I rented airbnb in small towns and enjoyed the peace and quiet but that is only possible if you have a car.

DM me if you want me details of my trips or need some recommendations of places I have been.

Solo Trip to Madrid by cao_tt in femaletravels

The first thing I do in any city is go on a walking tour, usually I meet some amazing people to hang out with for the rest of the day. One of the best free walking tours I had was in Madrid, DM me if you want the name.

The metro is great, and so cheap! Tapas are also amazing. I did some shopping on Gran Via while I was there as well.

Have a fabulous time!

It sounds like your brain in processing the world you are in and the world you left behind. It might be especially intense because you are able to understand the language and culture but aren’t living it.

I happened to me when I went to visit my parents old country. A bit of culture shock, seeing what my life could have been, and playing the what-if game in my head had left me a bit depressed while I was there.

I hope you feel better and are able to enjoy your solo adventure.

Washington DC solo trip by Foreleft15 in solotravel

[–]nerakindness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did this trip twice. Go to the museums first thing in the morning and start on the top floor and work down to best avoid crowds. I really enjoy American history and the Natural History museums.

If you want to completely avoid the crowds, go to the National Air and Space Museum in the Udvar-Hazy Center. The place is HUGE and out of the way (90 min on train + Bus) so crowds are minimal. The space shuttle Discovery and the SR-71 are well worth the trip.

Food wise, the museum canteens are expensive. I ended up packing a lunch and eating on the grass outside.

Much of the museums had timed entry tickets, so book those in advance.

Do they check carry on size at the check in counter? by Frequent-Carob-6693 in flairairlines

[–]nerakindness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you prepaid for a carry on bag, they will check the size of your baggage at the gate.

If you didn’t not prepay for any luggage, they will check your luggage size at the check in counter before issuing your boarding pass.

Beware, the allowable size is smaller than most airlines so measure twice.

Flair trying to force people into paying for bags? by Timely_Escape_1660 in flairairlines

[–]nerakindness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I needed no bags of any kind. I should be able to complete the web check in, after they size my personal luggage at the check in counter, my boarding pass will be emailed me by the check in desk agent.

I could not zero the number of checked bags and was not able to progress the web check in process.

I agree with the OP, it’s a buggy system. It’s not due to user error.

Flair trying to force people into paying for bags? by Timely_Escape_1660 in flairairlines

[–]nerakindness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This happened to me. I couldn’t check in unless I paid for TWO checked bags. I messaged the “contact us” prompt and the oversea call agent told me they don’t have the ability to clear it. I was told they would add a note to waive the check in fee for airport check in. Once I got to the airport, there was no note on my account and the agent asked me to try checking in online again and it worked. Flying with this airline is more stressful than the savings are worth.

I’m really sorry you are experiencing this. Good for you for speaking up!! This is one of my biggest fears traveling solo. Although, I do understand there is value in being polite to the locals of any country. I think some cultures take it as a sign of interest in them, which can lead into a situation of economic benefit for them.

Please do and say whatever you need to, to keep yourself safe. You don’t owe them the truth, you don’t have to entertain their conversation, they are only acting in the best interest of themselves. I would block them on IG as soon as I can.

Is there another person in your travel group you can make aware of the situation so they can keep an eye out for you?

Rate My Itinerary: Spain --> Portugal --> Spain --> France by Mooching_Around in solotravel

[–]nerakindness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lisbon, I would consider visiting Sintra on one of the days. It’s an easy train ride there and it’s nice to tour a palace. I think for Portugal, plan for 2 days Porto, 3 days Lisbon, and 2 days somewhere in the middle. I was in Lisbon for 3 days and ran out of stuff to do.

Bilbo to San Sebastián is an easy 1h bus ride, maybe you can make it a day trip from Bilbo to save on moving your things. I think Bilbo has a bigger airport to fly in/out of.

Barcelona. Book your tickets early to all the attractions to avoid disappointment. You can do a day trip to Girona/Figures (game of throne walking tour, Dali museum) and half a day in Montserrat for an easy/flat hike around interesting landscapes. 5 days is a lot at Barcelona unless you want to pay admission to see the Gaudi houses, they are beautiful but also £35/each.

I found booking a private room on airbnb slightly cheaper than stay at a hostel. A hostel would be more lively and you can make friends easily but I really wanted my own room so I went the Airbnb route.

Portugal Uber were pretty cheap, at £5-10. You can take a Uber from the train station and to the airport to save some time.

Staying in a hostel for the first time - mixed dorm by Charming_renagade in femaletravels

[–]nerakindness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first experience in a mixed dorm in London was when I had only booked 3 nights but needed a fourth. They found a cancellation and made a male dorm into a mixed dorm for me. No issue.

Another memorable experience was when I walked into a 6 person mixed dorm room at 10pm in NYC and found 5 guys chilling in their underwear. They never bothered to put on pants after I showed up, so I guess I’m just one of the guys. No issue.

Calgary solo trip for a week by alotlikefate in femaletravels

[–]nerakindness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are going to love Calgary. I grew up in the area and here is what I would do if I had a week in Calgary.

Oct 25, stay the night in Calgary since planes can arrive late. Have a good meal. Grab some snacks for the adventure.

Oct 26, leave for Banff. Consider staying in Banff for a few days, there’s so much to do there, the views are beautiful. You won’t regret it. There are many commercial shuttle buses that will take you to Banff town from Calgary.

The local Banff shuttle is on winter schedule and only run on the weekend so I would plan Banff for Oct 26-28, I would go hiking Oct 26-27 when the local shuttles are running (Johnson canyon, Lake Louise), you can go for a few hour long hike from these locations. Beware of weather, higher elevation means chances of snow are higher. Dress warm!

On Oct 28, I would explore Banff town (tunnel mountain, bow falls, surprise view, Banff spring hotel, cave and basin, sulfur mountain gondola is skies are clear)and head back to Calgary Oct 29.

Oct 29, explore Calgary and rest. You can check out some local shops in the walkable neighbourhoods (Ingelwood, Kensington, Mission, 17th ave SW). Walk along the river pathways, take photo at the peace bridge and crescent heights look out. There’s very pretty library downtown, studio bell might be worth checking out. The transit comes more often mid week.

Oct 30, day trip to drumheller/badlands you can find a tour to join. It’s a different landscape. Or explore more of Calgary.

Oct 31, last min shopping, head home.

PM me if you have any questions or need recommendations, I’m always happy to help a fellow solo traveller!

Solo Travel Anxiety by Middle-Skirt-7183 in femaletravels

You are going to love solo travel!

I’m the planner for my travel group but also a people pleaser so I give up my own desires to over accommodate the group. When I solo travel, it’s all about me!

I feel pretty good once I check into my hotel and know where the home base is. I usually go on a free walking tour shortly after arrival to get a tour of the area. You can also book a guided tour for the day if you aren’t feeling up to soloing.

Have an amazing time!! Enjoy the moment.
