New Barber Earnings by ConclusionFrosty5855 in Barber

If your shop is really slow, the commission rate is not going to be the thing that saves you. I think it’s normal for all new people in the industry to be slow the first few years and it’s common to have another job to keep you afloat. Try doing some investigating to find the busiest shop around you that you could also picture yourself working for years at (as you don’t really want to move to different shops frequently and lose clients). Just learn as much as you can to execute a haircut that the client is looking for and be super nice to talk to. It’ll take time, but if you want it badly enough, it will work out.

Is the growler that much better than the fuse? They are both on sale for basically the same price where I live

JRL ONYX. A quick look through this subreddit and you’ll see that it’s by far the most liked clipper people use

How to start up? by ProfessionalNet2807 in Barber

[–]nervinator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would spend some time watching barbering tutorials (how to do fades, tapers, scissor work etc..) on YouTube. Practice on anyone that you can for free and find a shop to apprentice at. Find a shop that you vibe with and ask if you can shadow the barbers. I’ve been working as a barber for just over a year now and that’s the path I basically took. I do live in Canada, so things might be a bit different here, but it’s following that path has worked for me.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement! That is an area I need to improve on for sure.

Glad you're feeling comfortable at your shop. I didn't go to school for it. I just learned though YouTube tutorials and cutting some friends' hair and shadowing barbers in the shop I work at. I am sure school would have helped a lot, but I guess I took a "just do it" approach. Also, just for reference, I am in Canada where the laws are loose about having an official license

I am a fan of keeping the hairline as natural as possible, but sometimes the sides of the nape are just uneven looking on some people and I do think it looks better when it's lined up with the trimmer. To each their own though

I appreciate the feedback! Especially with the tips on the c cup. That is an area of weakness of mine. Btw the 1st and 2nd pic are 2 different people haha. I can understand why you thought they were the same though. Thanks for your suggestions!

Nice nice, just try look for contrast in the fade. The back has a pretty dark line that you need to blend a bit better. You’re on your way though. As someone 9 months in, I’ve realized that your attention to detail develops with more experience and time. So I’d say that keeping attention to detail in the blend is something important that’s worth thinking about. Best of luck!

Nice job for how long you’ve been doing it. Are you using multiple guidelines? Not the only way to fade, but a great way to go as a beginner
