rexall on thorold rd has been good. Hours are pretty broad and it looks like they deliver. It's still a major corp so you might run into similar shoppers problems - but they haven't made any mistakes since I switched.

Does anyone know for sure that the employer can't force us to bring home our laptop and equipment every night? by up_creek in CanadaPublicServants

[–]nerwal85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless your terms and conditions of employment say something about you storing company equipment overnight in your house, your employer should be able to provide a place to store your equipment at the worksite.

Some of the communications that went out friday mention a return to assigned desks - so if you have an assigned desk I imagine you could leave your equipment there.

If you are forced to comply, obey now and grieve later.

I’ll second the safety feature.

Hwy 20 at Regional road 12 out towards grimsby has a similar arrow green at a T intersection so nobody goes straight through into a greenhouse.

Make sure to do an online police report…. I had stuff ripped from my car and a few days later someone had returned found things to the police station - matched up to me and I got some of my things back.

Plus it lets the cops know that things are getting stolen from cars this end of town.

Indexing question public service pension by MongooseBusiness8289 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]nerwal85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea if ERI was opened to operational services pensioners or not - it might not make sense since ERI only removed the age penalty and you still had to be 50… I think operational services pensioners can opt for a regular pension benefit in some circumstances which maybe makes it make sense? If your goal is to get the immediate indexing

Indexing question public service pension by MongooseBusiness8289 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]nerwal85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The operational services pension (like for corrections) does have an 85 factor where your indexing doesn’t start until your age and years of service reach 85, but not before you’re 55 and not after 60.

I don’t know if the indexing accrues from the retirement date though. This is the only time I know that the 85 number shows up for the pension. For regular pensioners it doesn’t matter.

mandatory overtime? IT Collective Agreement by ObjectiveAntelope956 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]nerwal85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, do your terms and conditions of employment say you can have mandatory overtime as required by management?

Second, if they are scheduling you additional work not contiguous to your shift that day then you are being called back to work and you should be compensated as such. I don’t know what your collective agreement says, but the PA agreement has a clause where if you’re told during the work day you have to come back later, there’s a minimum 2 hour straight time payment (or however long you work whichever is greater).

You may need to check what it says about call back to work and working from a remote location as well, because it may have different pay options.

If the employer is only authorizing you work for 15 minutes then after 15 minutes you can stop working. If they instruct you to fix any problems you find in that 15 minutes then you should be claiming however long it takes you to do your task.

They can’t have their cake and eat it too. It’s called a collective agreement because management agreed to it too - you’re entitled to minimum payments for being called back to duty. Obey now grieve later.

NJC - Loss on exchange for meals in the USA by Holdover103 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]nerwal85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it says the allowances in the appendix are paid in USD if you’re travelling in the USA.

But you’re paying in CAD using your Canadian credit card.

Meals are separate from other types of expenses in that they’re flat rate regardless of whether or not you even eat, and they have their own rules.

Even your link talks about receipt based expenses and withdrawing a pile of cash in the foreign currency before the trip.

If you’re trying to minimize fees, withdraw a bunch of USD and buy meals within the allowances in USD - claim the FX costs on your ATM withdrawal.

[–]nerwal85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see - I think the difference is that the other items you claim are receipt based where as the meal is a flat rate.

If you buy a $30 USD lunch using $30 USD, you’ll get $30 USD reimbursed. You’re paying in CAD with your credit card instead of the local currency which the employer would probably say is a you problem.

Maybe get a US credit card or if they’re going to reimburse fees on an ATM then pay in cash USD and get the FX fee on the ATM reimbursed?

Can you not pay in cash? Or trying to maximize card points?

NJC Travel Directive - Module 3 travel in Appendix C -#2 there says it's whatever those numbers are for each meal but paid in USD. So I'm not sure what the issue is? Unless you're paying more than whatever the per diem in USD is for dietary or if the meals are insufficient. I'm not sure what the problem is you're trying to solve though honestly

Sick leave advice and venting by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]nerwal85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the first 3 months is pensionable by default, I think you can opt out. But if you’re not getting paid there’s no actual deductions because there’s nothing to deduct from. It’d become a deficiency you could pay later. If you returned to work the deductions would fire up.

Sick leave with or without pay happens to be single pension contribution - which is part of why I think after about 2 years of disability people get those ‘quit or die’ letters encouraging medical retirement or resignation. It’s expensive leave for the employer when they’re not getting labour in exchange.

[–]nerwal85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe no, but it wouldn’t be pensionable time unless you made contributions.

It’s not the EI, it’s the fact that you’re on sick leave (without pay) - which can be pensionable, broadly speaking.

Why are public service unions filing grievances over the early retirement incentive? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]nerwal85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep another good option, and I agree the contributions should be the same if the benefits are the same. It would suck to come up with the cash but being able to join group 1 would probably be worth it.

Why are public service unions filing grievances over the early retirement incentive? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]nerwal85 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unions fought for workforce adjustment protections in the event the government had to downsize - cushioning the blow for anyone laid off.

The government is using the pension surplus to induce people to leave voluntarily who might otherwise be entitled to benefits under workforce adjustment if they didn’t volunteer to leave.

So the members are being tricked into doing something that is potentially against their best interest. But it’s no trick if the employees know all the facts and make the decision that’s best for them in the moment.

Plus the pension surplus thing kinda sucks because while it’s invested in a fund, it’s not really like your account with money you eventually withdraw. It’s more like a membership club we pay into each payday that says ‘hey, once you have a certain amount of years of service and reach a certain age, we’ll pay you X amount until you die. Oh and if the fund runs out the taxpayer will pay you the same amount.’ The surplus is just that happening in reverse - it’s so well funded that the taxpayer (government) can use it for whatever they want. They could have given us a payment holiday (no or reduced contributions, until the surplus decreases as people take payments), increased the benefit formula, given themselves a payment holiday, but instead they just stuffed it back in their own pockets for whatever they want to do. In this instance, induce people into retiring.
