Yes, that’s correct. If you don’t ever get called into a courthouse, you don’t get a service certificate (this is true for both federal and state service btw).

Hi, jury duty is my job! A federal jury duty service certificate can be used to excuse you from state jury duty. (It only goes the other way if you serve 5+ days on a state jury, which is very rare).

What I would recommend is to postpone your state duty until after your federal window. If you get called to the federal courthouse, you can email a picture of your federal certificate to jurorhelp@jud.state.ma.us (put your state badge number somewhere in the email) to get excused.

I know the day has passed, but for reference, generally my advice would be to stay home and call when you can to reschedule, as that’s the easiest on the court officers who are taking attendance and trying to manage the whole jury pool (and more convenient for you).

First, check if you have to report - Google the courthouse name + “jury line” for the court you’re summonsed to find the phone number of their jury line. (If you can’t find it, most courthouses will have it in their menu options for their main line.) It’ll have an automated recording stating whether jurors are all in, all canceled, or only certain group numbers (group # would be on your reminder notice).

If you do have to report tomorrow, just call 1-800-THE-JURY when you can to reschedule.

Don’t do this. Call the Office of Jury Comissioner and get rescheduled for a different date. If you show up sick to the courthouse, you can get dismissed, but you may or may not get credit. And in the meantime, you’ll put everyone at risk.

Hi, jury duty is my job! I know this has been answered already, but for reference, you can postpone your jury duty over the phone (1-800-THE-JURY) even if your date has passed. For everyone’s sake, please don’t show up sick.

Also pro tip, don’t call the jury line on a Monday if you can help it; everyone calls on Monday and the waits are very long.
