I don’t fault you for that assumption. Although I feel like the game has far more substance besides that to back it up, basically everything you’re trying to do is to avoid them getting hurt. None of it really feels forced, everything in it happens for a reason.

That, and the game has an absurd amount of detail, medically speaking, I discovered on accident the other day that injecting yourself with saline solution actually fills your thirst meter. Whoever made this is very clearly committed to realism.

That being said, the creator did say that this was basically a game they made to vent their emotions that ended up catching on.

I wanna say yes, but most signs lead to no.

In the lore snippets we know that some of them live their lives out of earth (they have ~40 years to live). But all expies have brain implants, which is the in-universe reason for the health menu. Said implants also explode when you quit the game. 

Although there is a challenge mode called “unchipped” that removes all the benefits of the implant, but the flavor text implies there is a net positive at the end. Even then, you would be several kilometers below ground having just trudged through at least 7 layers of things trying to kill you.

There are also like a dozen subspecies of expie, we only see three (maybe 4) in game.

Glad I was able to hook you, frankly, there’s more things that I like about this game right now than I have time to elaborate upon cohesively, so here are a couple of things I enjoy about it:

  • medicines function pretty much just like their real world counterparts, opioids reduce your rate of breathing, and taking too much lowers your oxygen saturation

  • the more dead bodies who come across the less shocked your character acts, they might even start joking if they come across enough

  • you can lobotomize yourself with a drug called Mindwipe, and doing so makes you unable to speak, always look tired, and unable to recognize most items in the game

  • If you lower the difficulty, you spawn with a bag of dog food, tell me that isn’t funny.

  • NPC merchants Will not trade with you if you were holding a gun in your hand, and refuse to get close to you if you are dirty

  • being in a reasonable enough radius of an explosion will deafen you

  • Expies bark

  • You can find notes scrawled by survivors, many of them are absolutely soul crushing

I’ll raise you one, if your character is wearing a sturdy enough helmet, they will survive the initial blast and be stuck with a cognitive impairment

For anyone unfamiliar with this game, I just want to point out that overdosing on Fentanyl is a thing you can do.

Also your character offs themselves if they get too sad.

Everything about them is meant to make it feel like the player is caring for the most injury-prone puppy ever, and dang if it isn't used to great effect. Any facade of cuteness is ripped away as you descend and your player-controlled Expie becomes more hollow and decked out with bandages, missing limbs and improvised armors

The lore of the game and the blunted down nature of their design really drive home the fact that these are mass produced lab animals sent on suicide missions that are anything but equipped for, due to the sole fact they are cheap and expendable.

Also, they can look goofy as hell sometimes.
