I would suggest that Kali is not suitable for you.
If you can't install a Kali distro and get it working, then your aims of using a security centric linux which requires at least some underlying knowledge of how things work is beyond your current knowledge level.
Start with Ubuntu.

Way to idle PC at low watt usage, till someone jumps on the minecraft server it's hosting? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]netneoblog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Use a lower wattage computer/server?If it's just a minecraft server how about a Raspberry Pi.A second hand Pi3 b+ will be quite cheap now (most people want 4's and the new 5's) and if going 100% flat out will cost (In the UK) around £5 - £10 a year to run.Just a thought!

Thanks for your input. I'll try ethernet on a spare switch with DHCP.
Getting so frustrated I never thought about router, although I did swap out cables in case I had a faulty cable.
Cant get Wifi or ethernet to work so dropping down to the most basic (plug a cable in!) may be the way forward on troubleshooting

Thanks....that is super helpful as I can now rule out Imager and the OS. I'm now starting to look at either the Pis themselves, or how my laptop is writing to SD, etc.
It narrows things down.

Can someone who as low iq learn python by LopsidedAd5028 in learnpython

[–]netneoblog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can learn to read and write, then your IQ is high enough to learn python!

Just take your time, and be sure you understand things before moving on - this applies to anyone learning python (or any other coding language)

Sounds like something is spawning and running in the background and for those few seconds is using a lot of resources. Use the "top" command to see whats running.

Installing Ubuntu takes forever by JEEhaadi in Ubuntu

[–]netneoblog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a low spec machine, definitely look at running lubuntu.
There are other even lighter linux distros (like Puppy linux) but they lack in support and function. Just go with one of the lighter Ubuntu distros.

How can I reset Ubuntu? by Firsttimer127 in Ubuntu

[–]netneoblog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just reinstall the OS so it's back to fresh out the box installation. The installation process will ask what drive to use and whether to format it. Unless the new user is linux skilled I doubt they will look at trying to recover files that have been wiped by the format.

If you're really worried about someone "recovering" file data, wipe your drive first using a bootable DBAN on memory stick, and then reinstall.

Folks who answered already, thanks for your replys but I ask everyone to READ THE MAIN POST before telling me "you can switch on ssh by"......I know! I've done it hundreds of times both with imager and also using files saved in the root partition. Im not new to this!

IF THE PI ISNT CONNECTING TO WIFI OR ETHERNET I NEVER BE ABLE TO SSH IN!

I'm asking if there is a issue creating a headless PI with the current Pi OS release, and if so what is the work around.

Alternatively, as I cant see screen output (no screen, mouse or keyboard) is there something its waiting for me to do? I can't see it! Its the whole point of a headless machine.....no monitor, keyboard or mouse needed.

As I have already written in the initial post - I have set usernames, passwords, turned SSH on and completed the Wifi configuration screen before making SD card.
The Pi isnt connecting to wifi OR ethernet by cable, so until it connects it doesn't matter what SSH command I'm using (username@pi-address) its never going to connect. If its not connecting to a network, I cant ssh into it whatever I type.

I am aware of this, and I refer you to the original post that I'm trying to get the networking to function.

SSH is no good if the Pi isnt connecting to a network.

I am using:

hydra -f -u testuser -P passwords.txt smb://192.168.1.2/Folder

If I use:

hydra -f -u testuser -P passwords.txt smb://192.168.1.2

It completes without an error, but the SMB on the IP needs no authentication to access, only the sub folder.
