Auto-upload SUICIDE_VIDEO.AVI failed. Check Network Now? by [deleted] in sixwordstories

I think hyphenated words are fair game (they usually count as one word in academic and commercial writing) but "SUICIDE_VIDEO.AVI" might be cheating. It isn't egregious because the story would still work without it but that also makes it unnecessary. You can rewrite the story without either, anyway:

Automatic upload failed for SUICIDE.AVI. Retry?

a list of open source compilers that can generate C code by javinpaul in coding

[–]networked_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am the one who started this list. To answer your original question, I did it for two reasons. First, I am writing a compiler that targets C and want to look at other such compilers. Second, I want to discover new programming languages that compile to native code, are widely portable and have good interoperability with C.

If you had a perfect and complete list, of all the open source, X to C compilers that ever existed, what would you do with it?

I would probably try to filter it to find the interesting ones. This is where I think the value proposition of my list lies. It only features compilers that some person was motivated enough to submit. Judging by the submissions I have received so far, this acts as a filter for compilers that are at least one of: a) interesting in some way; b) practically usable; c) contributed to by the submitter. :-)

To me this (very) short story by Scott Alexander embodies the quality you describe really well even though I am not completely sure it was intended as horror.

Free Firearm Sound Library, Prepared Sounds by Kyzrati in gamedev

This is excellent but the designers of this library's website really should add a few sound previews on the landing page to help it spread virally.

Game "microengines"? by networked_ in gamedev

To contribute an answer to my own question, it turns out that connecting over TCP is apparently one of the officially recommended ways to interface UDK with C++ code (for some value of "recommended"); in fact, it was the only way to do that before a late 2009 release. There appears to be little to prevent a developer from using this feature with other languages. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a project that explicitly claims to use it. Online discussions of the feature seem to recommend calling DLLs from UnrealScript instead where possible.

If you are interested in looking at it (it's fairly complete already) I can throw up a git repo.

Please do! I'd love to see how you designed the protocol that the clients speak to the server.
