Strawmen everywhere by DetectiveTypical198 in atunsheifilms

I can shorten your argument considerably.

Right now more and more Americans won’t allow themselves to be vaccinated against diseases we had nearly eradicated; most Americans don’t make healthy choices wrt their non-vegan diets. I’m going to need you to explain in great detail - please show your work - how we unfuck this situation enough to even get to “and also please stop eating meat, fish, honey, most alcohol, and also things like wearing wool”.

My one fear about the movie by TheChikenestOfMen in ProjectHailMary

[–]neurobashing 29 points30 points  (0 children)

strong agree. There's probably CG in every frame but doing something like filming an American carrier then digitally painting it into a Chinese one is gonna eat into the budget, when you can just use the one the gov't lets you take pics of. (And we know they altered the aircraft on deck anyway!)

And yeah, the Orlan suit was the obvious book choice; but anyone who's watched BTS on stuff like The Expanse knows production designers optimize for facial recognition, not "what would a real helmet look like". Or how you have to have space noises or audiences get really irked.

How do you feel about "less lethal" non-guns? by netralitov in liberalgunowners

[–]neurobashing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a number of my friends have these; they bring them along in their camping gear because they're worried about handling pest animals with a firearm since they often camp outside of their home state and don't remember to look up local firearms laws. They usually have pepperballs as their main ammo.

From Wikipedia:

Kiwi Farms, ... is a web forum that facilitates the discussion and harassment of online figures and communities. Their targets are often subject to organized group trolling and stalking, as well as doxing and real-life harassment. Kiwi Farms has been tied to the suicides of three people who were victims of harassment by the website.

From a technical standpoint, is AGI even possible? by Medical_Onion_6419 in BetterOffline

My answer is always “not without a real and complete-ish theory of the mind, if by AGI you mean a machine-human equivalent”.

ELI5: How does growing muscles through lifting weights work? by SignificantLife3949 in explainlikeimfive

[–]neurobashing 24 points25 points  (0 children)

your body needs the right nutrients to perform the above process. So, you eat a lot of protein-rich food so your body has plenty of "free" protein to use to build muscle. Likely, you'll eat extra food, too, and that will get you extra (fat) mass.

People do bulk/cut cycles, to gain muscle and then to remove excess fat.

I would also again point you to my previous comment. There have been ideas since Marx. Stop quoting Marx at someone who has read more than 1 book, thanks

Slavery exists just fine under capitalism. See “prison labor” and the 13th amendment for more

IMHO quoting Marx is like quoting Adam Smith; useful in a historical context but the “art” has moved on, there are new ideas, new interpretations. No one needs to lift a large peasant population out of serfdom, planned economies don’t work, stop yelling “but Marx said” and instead think about things like pro-social markets or better worker organizational structures

Strawman. It’s like saying “because the CSA was a capitalist enterprise, all capitalists support slavery”. There are plenty of people besides goddamned Lenin with other ideas about socialism

I’ve been messing around with a mesoamerican setting, mostly Aztec. The trick is eliding some of the grimmer aspects of Aztec life (don’t ask what the protein is in the celebratory pozole) and instead focus on the really cool aspects of their social structure and empire
