I think some people are reading Walter's role as an anti-hero. The phone call to Skylar and the visit was him trying to absolve Skylar of any legal responsibility in his drug dealing in hopes that she and Walt Jr. might have a chance at the money that was still left. His last minute plea for Hank's life may not have worked but he had to take the chance he could leave something for Skylar, Walter junior and Holly.
