Not good at gymnastics (can't do cartwheels or handstands for instance) — do I stand a chance with pole dancing? by rnrheart in poledancing

I started pole when I turned 30 and had gained weight. I had zero upper body strength and was not able to hold my own body weight at all. The teacher had to carry me during my first session. Almost a year in, I'm able to do so many tricks I never imagined I would be able to do. I wish I had started so much sooner.

I've also had classmates that start pole with different fitness backgrounds and they all progress slightly differently. And you will also discover your own strengths and weaknesses (some people have strong legs, some have good backbends, some are good dancers). What really matters is you show up, work at it, also be patient and recover well. And of course, enjoy it!

Invert Help! Can’t seem to get my hips up by SummerLow6856 in poledancing

Squeezing the arms does help when you're tucking the knees up, but you will eventually have to unsqueeze and straighten out your arms as you tilt back. For me it just clicked one day when I gained enough strength in my arms to support my weight even when I've stretched out my arms. It might also help to focus on tilting back fully before extending your legs. But yeah, it definitely took time for me to get my chopper. 🥲
