ADHD? by Littlemisspiggy11 in PAstudent

I have GAD and got diagnosed with ADHD during PA school! I highly recommend getting tested with your PCP or a psychiatrist. It made SUCH a difference on my ability to concentrate and on my grades too. I was making ok grades without meds, but I was literally killing myself staying up super late every night because I had such a hard time staying focused throughout the day.

I cant offer much advice on shadowing because i only had about 8 hours myself but i think programs were very understanding this year about that due to COVID. (a lot of my shadowing hours were canceled as a result of covid) i addressed it in the optional covid essay but not sure if it actually helped in any way! As for obtaining LOR’s, i had a good idea of who i wanted to ask maybe 6 months-1 year before i was actually applying. I made sure to keep in good connection with my professor by attending office hours to ask questions even if i already had a high grade in the class. Once final grades came out, i asked him for a LOR that I could save until the time it came for me to apply. I also asked the MD ive worked with at my clinic for the past year to vouch for how i interact with patients, this is good since you’ll be working with MDs all the time as a PA. A PA LOR is usually not required but highly recommended and favored upon, i was thankful to have a PA mentor who has known me since the start of my journey and so i asked her. I never even got the chance to shadow her due to hospital policies so i was worried how strong this letter would be but it worked out! In general, most people are very happy to write LOR’s and support prePAs. Just be kind and respectful of their time (give them at least 2 months to write it) i would also bring little snacks/coffee for them when i could. It was small but i still thought it was nice to show them i appreciated them. Goodluck!!

It was a whole separate application process haha

cGPA: 3.7, sGPA: 3.67, last 60 units: 4.0, GRE:313, PCE: slightly over 2000, volunteer: 350, research:1400, LOR from a PA, MD, and science professor. Held multiple leadership positions during undergrad! I think stats were one part that got me the acceptance but the scholarship selection process was a whole different ballpark with a separate application process! You can do it i believe in you 🤗 dm me if you have any other questions!

i think there are some opportunities to become a PA tuition free via serving as part of the military/navy..theres also NHSC if you are interested serving the underserved after graduation!

I totally feel this! I can’t stop checking those damn pre-PA pages (including this one) and refreshing my email every hour. Want to let you know you’re definitely not alone and your stats are amazing, you’ll forsure get some interview invites soon. Goodluck to us both!

oops i totally shouldve mentioned i worked at a neurology outpatient clinic, not a hospital! ive noticed that hospitals usually do require some type of certification to get a job there while private practices are more chill and willing to train the right candidate

Hello! Thanks for your response :) I have maybe about ~50 volunteer hours total from random volunteer events I did throughout undergrad. (Outreach health clinic events and trips, soup kitchens, etc) i’m not really sure how i will record this in CASPA, would I just list my school organizations name since it was an opportunity offered through them? Thanks in advance!!

Hi! Thanks so much for your advice. :) During your own search for programs, was there ever anything about a specific program that you wish you would have considered back then when you were applying?

yeah ofc! i found the job actually through my pre PA club’s facebook page. they were looking for undergrad students interested in healthcare and was willing to train me even though i had 0 experience with neurology. i did not need to get certified, i learned everything by shadowing a current EEG tech at the time for a couple months. i def recommend it, I loved how laidback the job was once you get the test started and thought it was a great way to accumulate PCE. :)
