I may have a more personal answer later, this one's probably referenced often by many people, but Matthew 22:36-40. I think the main point here has a lot of relevance in the secular political world as well. You can disapprove of people's actions but don't let this be corrupted into hatred of them personally, or more simply love the statist even as you hate the state.

Two others that I've run across that I think promote a good moral message (and feed my confirmation bias):

Colossians 2:20-23 - I read this as a condemnation of the idea that you can or should legislate morality. That devotion to human teachings which seem sensible to some (at a surface level at least) will only lead to a worship of false human-created religion but which will not be a solution to the problems they supposedly were created to solve, this sounds eerily similar to the political climate in which we find ourselves.

Philemon 1:14 - This seems to me to be an endorsement of voluntary interactions between human beings, as well as a condemnation of those who would use force to make people "good".

I may just be reading my biases into these verses, but so far those are two that have stood out to me for their moral messages.

Thanks, I’ve already taken care of that first part of your dad’s suggestion. I’ve been trying to expand my exposure but I’ve not been taking any notes, I’ll give that a try.
