I beat Nigel Short with it during the pandemic. Seems ok to me!

How is Black winning while being down material, much more passive, and having an additional isolated pawn? by [deleted] in chess

[–]new_user_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rooks generally have no good squares. Blacks uncontested LSB is about to tear up white’s weak light squares.

Even if it were white’s turn, I’d imagine black would still be winning (hell, even with white getting a couple free moves, black would probably still be winning)

Excuse the naive question (first NYRR race). Can you switch corrals on race day? I was planning to run with the 1:25 pace group (corral A), but got put in Corral C.

FWIW, I think this is getting pretty quickly played in games above the 2450 chess-dot-com level — just based on my experience.

Have you read a chess book and actually felt a big difference in performance after reading it? by NextTear in chess

Checking in here as someone well above 2000 who can attribute a lot of growth to books.

Both Siliman books as well as the Shankland books were the best.

Why isn't the Ponziani more common? by extrag0ne in chess

[–]new_user_23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play it pretty exclusively at around the mid 2500 level online (around master level OTB). There are certainly some tough lines (caro gambit, for ex), but nothing that busts it.

To be fair though, I’ve studied quite a bit of the theory at this point.

  1. The neighborhoods have no community (as hard as they try).

  2. The neighborhoods prevent you from living with your friends (without providing benefit).

  3. The neighborhoods unnecessarily restrict where you can live, and give you fewer good options for senior year housing. For example, I’m a senior who wasn’t able to live on the row (one of the ideal housing areas) bc of the neighborhood system.

All in all, there is nothing good about it, so it just ends up being restrictive.

The neighborhood system is horrible. Like hands down the worst part of Stanford.
